Chernobyl 20 years on The sheer weight of everything they had dropped on the reactor from the air - including 2,400 tons of lead - had not only caused structural damage but was pressing the hot reactor core against its concrete base. And if the uranium reached meltdown temperature - 2,900C -a single sphere of molten fuel would burn through the concrete foundations of the reactor building, and keep going until it reached the water table. At that moment, there would be another explosion; the three remaining reactors would be destroyed in a nuclear blast that would render Ukraine, Belarus and Russia uninhabitable for decades to come.

What are your dating dealbreakers? The person you date MUST....
Neoligism I need a word for the feeling you get when you hear someone you used to "know" in an on-line game interviewed on the radio, and you wonder if you should IM them to say "what's up", and if you do if you'll get somehow sucked in to the black hole of time suckage that is on-line gaming.
In July, 1945, Benjamin Britten accompanied the violinist Yehudi Menuhin on a brief tour of defeated Germany. One day, the two men visited the concentration camp at Bergen-Belsen. Britten went home and set to music the most spiritually scouring poetry that he could find -— the
Holy Sonnets of
John Donne. He composed nine songs at feverish speed, beginning, on August 2nd. On August 6th, the day of Hiroshima, Britten set
Sonnet XIV, which begins, “Batter my heart, three-person’d God.” Robert Oppenheimer was spellbound by the same poem, and had it in mind when he named the site of the first atomic test Trinity.

Like the four shining heroes raising Old Glory at Iwo Jima, like Martin Luther nailing his ten declarations to the chapel door, like John Carlos and Tommie Smith raising their hands at the Olympics in defiance; every act of resistance is a battle won, no matter how big or small. That is why, to my delight, walking past Blenz on Hastings to the Spartacus Books grand re-opening, I discovered a few notes taped to the door. Four employees, sick of slave wage labour and an ungrateful boss, up and left. Walked out, en masse, in the ultimate act of defiance against corporate middle management.

So like we need some cheerin' up? I got just one thing to say:
HEY LADIES!
OMG I am on a plane at 35,000 feet and I am posting to MetaChat. How cool is that? Now I know how my grandparents must have felt when they first heard radio. What a way to waste ten bucks per hour.
yeah, so I'm suddenly ass-over-crown in love and it's bazoomingly great to the moon and back oh-wow-hello-now-tingle-goo-goo but I'm sitting here restless as hell with nothing to do and all I can think about is seeing her but I can't see her right now and I'm pretty much bonkers in the meantime. It's only till tomorrow but sheezus christ. What am I going to do with myself until then? I don't want to drink, I don't want to work out, I don't want to read, I don't want to sit, I don't want to stand, I don't want to MetaFilter, I don't want to work, I don't want to sleep, I don't want to write, I don't want to eat, I don't want to GAHHHH. How does it become so impossible to be apart from someone you've only just met? This is an uncomfortable stage where I'm not only driven to distraction by thinking about her but afraid, every second she's out of sight, that something's going to happen to screw it all up. Please offer me suggestions for distracting myself, even for a few seconds at a time.
Am I crazy? I'm finally painting my office (adjacent to the famed

Most unexpected meetup ever So last night I'm at this SXSW party, where I met a lot of people. One of these people was a cute guy with glasses and sideburns who sort of reminded me of someone else I'd met recently.
Tonight, who should I see but this same guy, and his look-a-like right behind him! Naturally I insisted on taking a picture of the together, after which we got to talking. He says to me "you remind me a little of my friend Specklet". Wait a minute! I know Specklet! I've drunk whiskey with Specklet! And by the way, being compared to her is one of the better compliments I have ever received.
