30 March 2006

I'm binging! Please hope me! I've decided to go on a one month fitness binge, as my birthday present to me, but I need YOU, metapeople![More:]

To start, I've hired a personal trainer to help with all the strength training, a yoga instructor to help with flexibility and relaxation and other such yogish things, and a personal chef to help eat tasty without eating bad. I think that covers everything except cardio. (Did I miss anything?)

Anybody have suggestions for fun ways to do cardio that aren't gerbilesque? (I know sex is an option, but I'm looking to do cardio six times a week, so it can't be the only option.)
Triathlon training!

Every workout is different, so you never get bored.

Depending on where you live, my other favorite cardio pursuits are: XC skiing and kayaking/canoeing.

oooh, kayaking and canoeing, Fantastic idea! (and somehow swimming failed to occur to me as well)

I felt silly asking, but I'm already glad I did! Two points for Miko!*

*points redeemable for delicious tacos at a rate determined by I Love Tacos's blood alcohol content.

Miko - you do triathlons? What's always bugged me about it is that there's no good verb for it. Does one "do" triathlons? One can't really "run" triathlons because that would ignore the bike and swim portions and vice versa.

But yes, training for a triathlon is great - you end up training almost constantly, with each workout being different from what you did last. The only downside is that you end up having to consume a huge amount of food. Okay, that's not the downside. The downside is getting your body to stop craving the calories when you're no longer training.

"Will someone think of the Tacos?"

You need a team sport in the mix. I suggest indoor* soccer in a co-ed "for fun" league.

* Or outdoor soccer, but you'll do more running indoor 'cause the pace is quicker.

triathle, triathled, triathling

On preview, I find that indoor is less running 'cos the field is a quarter the size. Especially for halfbacks. But I haven't played indoor as assiduously as I have outdoor. Could be.

Frisbee golf is good fun and low impact exercise.

I like riding my bikes for cardio but I do have the Monterey Bay to ride next to so my scenery is pretty darned spectacular.

Hmm... are there soccer leagues that would let me commit to just one month?

And Frisbee Golf counts as exercise? for real? I have trouble counting regular golf as exercise (probably something to do with the beer and hot dogs), let alone frisbee...

ILT-- Possibly, but perhaps unlikely in terms of getting on a team for just a month (and that month coordinating with your month of exercise). However.....

It depends on your location, but when I used to do more of this you could go to the indoor arena and a specific time and just play in the pick up games they had (provided you had the right shoes and paid some kind of fee). Also, you could find from that experience that a few of the pick up game players are also on some of the recreational teams that play regularly on other nights. Then you make friends with them if you want to play more than just a month.

PS. Hugh, you may be playing it too well.

Pick up game times and rest of the schedule for the arena should be online (if they want new customers).

And sorry about the bold, it was to mean something less agressive than it looks now. I dunno. Maybe if I rub my eyes the meaning will shift back to what I intended.

oogs booga: I "do" triathlons. Sometimes triathletes use the word 'triathlon' as the verb, as in, "I've been triathloning for two years."

AS far as the food: I only do sprints and intermediates so far. I don't eat a lot yet. But it's wonderful to eat food and not worry about it.
