30 March 2006

I cannot get anything done. [More:]I have a million projects I want to do, but I can't get started on any of them. Any advice? I don't have a job right now, so time isn't really a factor--except that I feel like I *should* be looking for a job--even though I have six months of Unemployment coming my way.
I feel the same way. It's a bright sunny day outside, I have a 3-day weekend coming up, and I can't motivate myself to DO anything I need to get done before I leave...

Motivation, what's that?

Write down the time you want to wake up at the next morning and what you are going to eat for breakfast. Then s pencil yourself in for a nice walk. Start the planning with the easy, fun stuff instead of the big stufff and you'll get more used to it.

/off to take own advice.

Take up smoking?

(have ceased nicotine my motivation level has bottomed out, and replacing nicotine with sugar doesn't work well for me)

I find that just starting a project/task is the hardest part. Once begun, it's easier to stay on track.

Make a to-do list.

Pick the easiest, quickest thing on your list and do it.

Take a break.

Seriously.

One the other hand, sometimes you just need to do nothing. It's restorative. Worrying that you're doing nothing while you do nothing is not. Maybe do nothing for a bit, set a timeframe for that and don't nag yourself, simply let things be for a bit. Then come back and commence with getting down to business with your bad self.

My mom's husband retired last year, and of course I don't work or anything. Anyway, my mom is always giving Gary a hard time about how he doesn't get anything done and he had and still has all these plans. I tried to explain that when you have all the time in the world, it's hard to get anything done. Because...what's the rush?

I did it! Thanks guys! Now I'm rewarding myself with a little down-time before dinner.

Yeah, that's exactly the nature of the problem; unemployment is so weird the way it alters your perception of time. The days go by so fucking fast, and then you look back on the week, and it seems like one week ago was a really long time ago.

I tried getting up at 9:00 this morning, and just utterly failed. Even having the computer turned off for awhile due to a storm didn't help me get anything done. Now I have only about an hour left of my day before I have to go do something, and then the week's basically over.

I guess a lot of my problem is that the projects I want to do are really huge, like in the year-or-more before completion range. Just making little drawings during the day isn't quite fulfilling enough for me.
