25 March 2006

I was emptying my pockets when I came home after my weekend ramblings and I found an Archie comic in my pocket.[More:] I rmember buying it at my local newsstand, mainly because I found it reassuring that they were still being sold in enough quantities to warrnat the series continuing (although I still found it to be entertaining reading). It's nice that there are still wholesome pleasures in this world. What corny peices of culture like that keep you going?
I always like seeing British comedies like Keeping Up Appearences and Are you Being Served? are still be shown on our local PBS affiliate. Even if don't find the shows as funny as I did when I was younger the fact that they're still shown on the TV is reassuring, in a weird sort of way.

er, that first sentence was a bit jumbled. Change the "seeing" to "that" or something.

I like that show, too, but it's fairly worldly compared to the pure innocence of Archie, Jughead and the gang, I think.

I watched a bugs bunny episode tonight kind of randomly, and it felt very reassuring in its own way. I might have to get some more of those.

in a nod to the modern age, the Archie Double Digest I bought had a gag about techno music (I am not kidding). Neat to see that they're keeping current. Archie's mother has a soccer momhaircut now, too. Mr. Weatherbee and Mrs. Grundy look the same as ever, though.

Ice cream and fudge shops on the Jersey boardwalk, many unchanged at least since the 50s, some since the 1890s or so. When I walk in out of the hot sun into that air-conditioned, sugary atmosphere, the aroma brings me right back to childhood.

miko, there's a place in Forest Hills, Queens just like that. Their sundaes are unbelievable. Someday, we'll split an ice cream soda there, two straws.

my dad used to tell me that across the street from his high school in Long Island City, Queens there was a 'candy store,' which in those days meant a place with ice cream and a soda fountain and a jukebox. these days, teh only places like that are bars, where kids can't go. Is it any wonder theat we all got into bad habits earlier than was good for us?

Hmmm, well in that case Jon lemme think a sec...

I'd have to say tablet then. One of my aunts used to make some great tablet, and the stuff my mom made was almost as good as hers. Or Edinburgh Rock. Even though it's been years since I had either. :

Seriously, you can't get any more "childhood innocent" "days long gone" than sucking the end of a stick of rock into a ultra sharp point suitable for poking baby brothers with. Ah, memories...

This doesn't really qualify as a childhood memory, or even necessarily corny, but every week I look very much forward to Antiques Roadshow. Missed it during their fundraiser the last couple of weeks. It's what gets me through Monday.

The other thing is a baseball game. Minor league. Cheaper, not as crowded, but still there's beer and hotdogs.

Children's books, the red and green lights on L.A. skyscrapers during Christmas, West coast monsoonal rains, two malls I have always shopped at, hummingbirds on camellia bushes, sweet gum tree seed pods, the corner Wienerschnitzels run forever by a Korean family who stuff the small fries packets with tons of fries.
