AskMeCha: who's this blonde, cute, young, female, probably american, jazz singer? Her band is like an orchestra.
Who, her?

Jane Bunnett?

I'm pretty sure its not John Shaft. But maybe this side of him would fall under the "Complicated Man" banner?

Any songs by this mystery songbird you can share to help narrow down the field?

Diana Krall? Except she's Canadian.

Ya know, I think it is this Diana girl. Fantastic! thanks.

She's married to Elvis Costello, who I find very hot.

I do not easily recall lyrics(in english) to help out fenriq, sorry. But she did play piano, now that I think of it, and she seemed to be revered by her band which consistent of much older, very good musicians.

Nellie McKay? Diana Krall's not exactly a young girl.

Yes, it is the "Concert in Paris" dvd that I saw. I am sure now!

occhiblu, she is not young? Anything younger than me is very young. And I will not argue that! *hugs*

Born in '64, according to the Wikipedia link, which would make her 42.

You killed me. She is older than me and looks helluva better and younger. I am going to die in my little corner now. Thanks.

I call that kind of music "Starbucks jazz". Not really my thing.

Heh. I was debating how far up on my high horse to get about grown women being called "girls"... :-)
posted by occhiblu 21 March | 12:16
(My high-horse had plenty of room for my own hypocrisy in calling men "boys," of course, but I only do that in reference to dating them, and I'm pretty flexible about guys using "girls" for the same purpose. In any event, the solution? We should all start dating Diana Krall.)

hmmm, I sometimes call us all girls. And I don't mind when someone calls me that. But then again I have issues with aging, goddamnit!

matildaben, your neighborhood Starbucks sounds good to me. The thing that impressed me really was that she seems so uncharacteristic of a jazz singer and yet her band was very, very high quality. And they seriously adored her. Oh, well.

Meanwhile, my Oren's coffeeshop plays good music too!

Starbucks sells a line of CDs of music picked by various artists. Elvis Costello has one, and it features a track by his wife Diana Krall ( -5 points) singing one of his own songs ( -500 points).

I swear it's like that harpy drained all the rock right out of him.

Capn, I Blame it on Cain.

Well great, now I have to listen to My Aim Is True.

The type of CDs marketed by Starbucks are the kind of music guaranteed to make people feel vaguely culturally adventurous without ever really pushing their comfort zone.
