BOOK It's a funny word, isn't it?
No. Rubber is a funny word. as is contraption.

It's better than bppl.

It's better the way the Irish pronounce it, with the 'oo' pronounced somewhat as in 'food.' 'Book' like 'look' is boring in America.

Is there a word for it, when you think about a word too long and it suddenly sounds unfamiliar and strange?

The way the martians from sesame st. said "book" was what I loved the most about that sketch.

Youtube link, natch.

...and Hugh brings up those words that one intentionally mis-pronouces affectionately. "Mazageen" is how it's pronounced in my family. It's also "speederwibers" instead of spiderwebs.

And rendezvous is pronounced 'rezendevus".

what about the verb "to book," as in to run fast?

I was once bitten by a dog named 'Book' pronounced the way shane describes. This was in Italy though, so it probably means something different over there.

wolfdaddy: my mother has an endless supply of those. My favourite is picturesque as "picture-skew".

What? How is it really pronounced? Wait, I'm thinking of picturesqueue aren't I? I always get those mixed up.

What story had a boy named Pictorial Magazine? Poor kid is un-googleable.
