Cat update [More:] We took Kira to a proper vet checkup yesterday; stem to stern and all of that. She's "remarkably healthy," which is nice to know, and "unusually affectionate," which wasn't news to us. We have to replace her clay-based litter because the dust is irritating her breathing a little bit; that's fine with me, since it doesn't do mine any favours, either. We're going back in a month so she can get her booster shots at the same time we chip 'er and fix 'er.

In addition to the fact that, you know, we found her taped into a fucking box, she shows other signs of abuse: the missing bits of fur on her back aren't from overgrooming, as suspected, but scarring from deep cuts; there are also many other scars that the fur's grown back over. The vet found a burn—almost surely from a cigarette—on the back of her neck and evidence of frostbite damage to her ears, the tip of one of which isn't just a little misshapen but actually missing in an unnaturally straight line.

I'm sick to my stomach typing this and feel like I'm about to cry, as I have since my girlfriend relayed the news last night. She is the sweetest cat I've ever met (and I've met a lot of sweet cats) and she wasn't just abandoned, she was horribly abused first.

Join me in some outrage, okay?

good, i didn't know where to put my outrage.
i was going to put it all in my hair style.

i've known many an abused cat who recovered well.
patience and calm.

(post the pictures of her again, Zozo?)

Pics from her first night at home are here. She's not as hide-y anymore (though she does like to sleep way back in our closet), so more pictures are surely forthcoming in the next week or so.

Poor kitty. She is blessed to have found you two!

World's Best Cat Litter. It is. Try it.

That's outrageous. I wonder how she has managed to retain her affectionate nature? She is very lucky to have you now; the majority of her life will be spent in comfort.

P.S. It is really a sign of a sweet disposition that she could have taken all of that and still love and trust (good) humans. What an awesome cat!

mats: We're hitting the pet superstore tonight; I'll keep an eye out. What makes it the best?

I'm outraged. But I'm also supper happy she has found you.

What a lucky cat she is to have found you guys. Animal cruelty makes me so angry.

I asked it in the first thread and I'll ask it again: WHO THE FUCK ARE THESE PEOPLE? Moreso, who raised these people? Where did they learn that aimal abuse was a form of entertainment? As angry and disgusted as I am, I can only imagine what kind of living hell one's life must be to mutilate a trusting animal and companion.

MotherFUCK.

God. If only they could catch the people.

God. I feel sick and devastated too.

Frisbee Girl: My reaction exactly.

shane: I am considering printing up abusive flyers and posting them in the alley where we found her.

These are the things that keep me awake at night. Knowing that this sort of abuse occurs.

Conversely, Zo, I know you're not sharing this to get ego strokes, but thank you. For your compassion at every level. The world's a better place for having people such as you and your girlfriend in it.

I mean that.

shane, there are many horrific things in the world. you're besides yourself, commentwise.

i hate to tell you worse things happen. please focus on what you can do.
and remember to sleep.

F.G.: I'm sharing this to get validation for my spitting rage, which is about as ego-driven. Heh.

Thank you, though. It's kind of you to say. :)

Good on you zozo. As for litter, look for a generic equivalent of feline pine. It's absorbant as hell and reduces the smell a lot. Also, it's biodegradable.

Some people should die. Those people would be a good start.

She will love you forever zozo. You are good people.

Poor lucky kitty. I'm so glad y'all found her.

I would give my own cat a big hug in appreciation, but ... she hates when I do that.

In general, I don't believe in eye for an eye justice but I would like to do to those people exactly what they did to Kira.
posted by gaspode 28 March | 12:39
I have nothing coherent about the abusers to add. Again, nice work Zozo
posted by arse_hat 28 March | 12:41
gaspode: You and me both.

Thank god that the kitty is willing to trust you!

GAAAAH. *plots bloody murder of kitty abusers*
posted by ooga_booga 28 March | 13:05
Exactly. The bright side: LUCKY KITTY! YAY!
posted by shane 28 March | 13:20
That's nauseating, zozo. There really are people that shouldn't be allowed to breathe.

Kira is one lucky kitty.
