Memo to Team Vag: when faced with a personal decision, you might want to call Bill Napoli. (This woman did.)
Hmm, I hadn't seen his description of an "acceptable rape" before.

For the record:
FRED DE SAM LAZARO (reporter): Napoli says most abortions are performed for what he calls "convenience." He insists that exceptions can be made for rape or incest under the provision that protects the mother's life. I asked him for a scenario in which an exception may be invoked.

BILL NAPOLI: A real-life description to me would be a rape victim, brutally raped, savaged. The girl was a virgin. She was religious. She planned on saving her virginity until she was married. She was brutalized and raped, sodomized as bad as you can possibly make it, and is impregnated. I mean, that girl could be so messed up, physically and psychologically, that carrying that child could very well threaten her life.

The relish with which he describes that "acceptable rape" never, ever, ever fails to make my skin crawl.

That said, the cartoonist? I want to buy her dinner. Bill can choose the wine.

I wonder...I wonder.

If women who were considering having an abortion--women whose contraceptions had failed, single mothers trying to support the kids they already have with no health insurance, women with health conditions that would make it dangerous to carry the child, women who were raped, etc. etc.--I wonder if each of these women called up these lawmakers and told them about their situation, and asked if they would pay for the health insurance for the delivery and the prenatal care and for insurance for the kid for the next eighteen years, and told them their stories, I wonder if that would change anything.

Nah.

(Note: I believe in abortion for any woman who wants/needs one, not just the examples mentioned above.)

And then I reminded him that murder by a spouse or boyfriend is the #1 cause of death among pregnant women

Huh, I never knew that statistic. That's pretty chilling.

I've always said I wouldn't wish rape on my worst enemy. For Bill Napoli, I'll make an exception.

Bill, hun, there is NO SUCH THING AS ACCEPTABLE RAPE.

It's nice to know that, if I'm every raped, it will be much less tramautic for ne because I'm not a pure, innocent, church-going South Dakotan. Thanks, Bill, for putting my mind at ease! Seriously, WTF!

OK, let's take a bit of time for something humanity affirming:
DR. MIRIAM MCCREARY, M.D.: I just remember from my practice how desperate women were, and I just wanted to be available to give them a safe abortion. There are doctors who can't do this, emotionally, possibly. But for me, I put myself in their position, and I want to treat them the way I'd want to be treated myself.
