(Castro praise from Americans is something of a bee in my bonnet, since during my 2 years in Miami, all my friends were exiles and/or their children, so I guess their dislike of the man rubbed off. Also, when people in Florida get on rubber rafts to float to Havana, then I'll believe what a great guy the fucker is.)
I respect him for standing up against the American government for so long and for the numerous failed attempts on his life but I don't know any Cubans (except cigars and they don't need rights) so I have no experience with the man as a ruler.
Just to clarify something: Castro is really not being magnanimous about the Katrina donation. This was a condition of Cuba's participation of the WBC to satisfy the US embargo.
pivo, the WBC organizers filed an application only saying that prize money won by Cuba would be given to charity. It was Castro's choice to give it to Katrina victims (I doubt that the Bush adminsitration would have chosen this in-your-eye route).
That said, I don't have to like Castro until he stands for election.
