Tonight I stopped by a local pub for a Reuben sandwich and a beer.[More:] And somebody put this song on the jukebox. Looking down the bar, I saw 80% of the patrons lips moving and singing along in their heads. That song is supposedly about a certain era but it can be applied to any time I think. This song wasn't played, but it has a similar effect, I think. Hope you all sing along in your heads, too. Or out loud. whatever you feel like doing.
This song has been resonating deeply with me lately, too, for what it's worth.

it's like automatic--how can you not sing at least part of it when you hear it?

"drove my chevy to the levee but the levee was dry, and good ol boys were drinking whiskey and rye, singing..."

Oh, I know, amber, but that's a monumental (and deceptively simple-seeming) achievement, to make something that connects with people across such a broad swath.

I remember when I was in 8th grade, I went to the high school battle of the bands with some friends. The winner was a group called Paraphernalia, and "American Pie" was one of the songs they played.

I could sing along even then.

There are songs we yanks have in our blood. We just can't help singing or moving along. California Dreaming seems to be another one. Americn Pie is at the top of the list for sure.

I first heard that song in elementary school, because it was right after "Starry Starry Night" on the record we were listening to while attempting to do our own copies of that painting during an art lesson. I want to say I was maybe in the 3rd or 4th grade at the time, and all of us kids laughed when we heard it, and loved it and would play those two songs back to back, over and over. And sing along during the chorus.
