AskMecha Is there one word for 'context-dependent'? Technical words are OK.

pertinent

relevant

or "something-ally" to start the sentence with? (financially, scientifically, economically, psychologically--like "Scientifically speaking, I'd say the results were quite illuminating." or something like that.)

situational too, but i never hear that used.

Situational is the closest to what i'm after, but it needs to sound impressive. It's for the title of a paper: "Context-dependent stingless bee response to spider webs"
posted by dhruva 13 March | 02:30
is the context their behavior or the weather or season or what kind of bee it is or age or sex or what?
posted by amberglow 13 March | 02:45
is it behavorial variability? or varying behavioral responses?
posted by amberglow 13 March | 02:46
WEll the bees change their behaviour based on the context of encountering the spider webs...
posted by dhruva 13 March | 02:47
so whenever they encounter a spiderweb they behave differently? and differently from when they encounter other obstacles?
posted by amberglow 13 March | 03:28
Contextual.

Parasituational stingless bee response to spider webs.

Huh. maybe I'll go with contextual.

Amberglow: The bees behave differently when they encounter a web on their way out foraging as opposed to when they encounter a web on their way back to the hive.

Adaptive might work.

Depending, you know, on context.
posted by stilicho 14 March | 00:53
Unfortunately adaptive is a loaded word in my field. It's usually used in the sense of evolutionary adaptations, and i can't use it in the title...
