Might it be a good idea... if we set up some kinda "dibs" calendar for the radio?[More:]When I did community radio, we had a calendar where we'd block out times when we intended to broadcast. That way, we wouldn't show up at the station at the same time with bundles of CDs. It might help with those of us who broadcast rather spontaneously and those who like to go on at certain times of day. With more-n-more DJs, this might be a good idea so we can share the wealth.

Then again, I've been drinking. It may be a sucky idea. Either way, I love y'all.
i'm not at the "love" stage but i do like you muchly

Radio Dibs

Now the questions are: do we really need this, and will people be diligent enough in using it for it to make sense?

Someone with spare time can make tables or whathaveyou. I've linked it (rather unceremoniously) from the Radio MeCha page.

the people who care and follow up get dibs
sounds fair

BTW, if you want the radio, it's still okay to ask the person currently broadcasting. They can say no, but I haven't seen this happen yet. Most people just don't want there to be dead air, and don't care who fills the time.

Not directed at anyone in particular; I just heard someone was concerned they couldn't get a time slot.

If I could, I'd do the morning (EST) time slot every day. I may not get 10 listeners, but it's always nice to be able to tune into Radio Mecha. I think the cost/month is the same no matter how much we use it, but I'd have to ask dodgy about that. So also think about running non-traditional timeslots, when 10 people don't all want to play at the same time. Not everyone has this luxury, of course, what with jobs and responsibilities, but I thought I'd just throw that out there.

Yeah, I had the idea after finding it hard to broadcast- which is actually a good thing, meaning that there are more DJs and less dead air. Anyway, a little order might not hurt.

but never jump a groove
i'll even bother to brush up on the business of it
maybe

Well, I done broke it in, though I'd like to hear dodgy's thoughts on the whole thing, in case he had something already in motion about this.

I don't mean to give the appearance of being presumptuous, but I've heard enough people mention it that I thought it would be worth a shot, at least as a stopgap. It's absolutely still pending review and revision by the higher ups.

What do you think about everybody converting their time to UTC? I made this, to make it a bit easier, though maybe it could somehow be incorporated into the page (just the time part).

I like the pick-up system we have now, but the dibs system would work, I guess. It seems a little bit like a layer of formality added to something that was very casual. Has anyone had a problem getting to play a set when they wanted?

I don't mind the posts on the front page calling for dibs, either- everyone sees those, and they serve as a nice reminder of what may be coming up on the radio.

I've had to wait almost a week to broadcast. Granted, I could if I were willing or able to stay up until 2 a.m., but my life isn't designed to accommodate that at the moment.

Let's try it for a little while and see how it goes. We don't have to be super-formal, but I think we are getting to the point where the number of DJs may be causing some inadvertent toe-stepping (as opposed to two-stepping, which is always good).

I think people should still post to the front page when they start though. People that do not play but do listen are probably not going to be checking the wiki all the time.

Also, how should a person that just pops on and plays until someone else wants the radio do this? Yeah, so that is probably only me, but still. If nobody is using/has dibs just put from (start time) to "when someone else wants it"?

If youre serious about this route, and i actually agree with BoringPostcards that there's an unnecessary level of formality being introduced*, then i suggest either this or this because its very non-intuitive as it stands at the moment.

And if youre going down this route, there needs to be some level of responsibiliy re booking a slot, like only being allowed to book 2 weeks in advance or something so that folks don't block book the drivetime/friday night slots for the whole year.

*however, because im on the other side of the planet and in a different timezone, this is slightly less relevant to me.
