Time for another music shuffle OK it's been a while. Put your music program onto shuffle and tell us the first 5 songs that come up. And something interesting about one/them. [More:]
I got:
1. Donde Esta La Pollo, - Headless Chickens. NZ band.
2. Blue Smiley's Plan, - Ultrasonic. I have more electronic-y/techno stuff that I think I do.
3. Exit Music - Radiohead.
4. Sharp Darts - the Streets.
5. Transmission - Low. Off one of matildaben's mixes. Yay!

1. Lacuna Coil - "Purify". I love Cristina's vocal lines on this song.
2. Adagio - "Sanctus Ignis". These guys out of France have tremendous musicianship, and every time I listen to them, I wonder why I don't listen to them more often.
3. Amaran - "Without Stains". Hit or miss with this band. This song is actually kind of a miss.
4. Arise From Thorns - "Dreaming". My friends' band! (They're called Brave now.) This is one of my daughter's favorite songs.
5. Nevermore - "The River Dragon Has Come". Bang. Your. Head.

Ooo, these are fun.

1. Mister Mister - Broken Wings. A result of my project to collect every 80's song I ever liked.

2. Tori Amos - God. I don't know, I haven't listened to her much.

3. Mozart - Sonata No. 10 in C Major, I. Allegro moderato. Pretty piano music.

4. Sublime - Hope. Don't know this song at all.

5. Beethoven - String Quartet in F major, Op. 95, I. Allegro con brio. Yay, Beethoven.

Hmph. I've gathered a lot of new music since we did this last time, and none of it came up. Oh well, no cheating here.

1. (I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone - The Monkees
2. Clocks - Coldplay
3. High 5 (Rock the Catskills) - Beck
4. Dougie Macdonald's Medley - Solas
5. Erased, Over. Out - Nine Inch Nails

Something interesting? Well... I'm not, in fact, your stepping stone.

1. Talkin' 'bout the Smiling Deathporn Immortality Blues (Everyone Wants to Live Forever) - Flaming Lips. I haven't listened to this song in over a year. The Flaming Lips are really Autumn music for me, and this Fall, I just didn't feel like listening to them.
2. Lucky Lindy - Vernon Dalhart. I forgot I had this version on my computer.
3. Political World - Bob Dylan. I hate this song.
4. I Just Dropped In (To see what condition my condtion was in) - Kenny Rogers. I was Limewiring Kenny Rogers songs the other night, and I downloaded this one because my girlfriend's one of those people who's really into "The Big Lebowski".
5. True Love Leaves No Traces - Leonard Cohen. From his "disco" album, the one produced by Phil Spector. I once heard a really good version of this song on the subway, being performed by two guys with an acoustic guitar.

Funny, all of these are songs I hardly ever listen to, or don't at all.

Elegua Quiere Tambo, Celia Cruz. Saw the CC exhibit at the Smithsonian last fall. She was very short.

Nothing But a Good Ride, Lyle Lovett. Good ol' fashioned song about a trucker who loves the road. Gotta love it.

Lakes of Pontchartrain, The Be Good Tanyas. This is an old public domain folk tune. This recording sounds upbeat on the surface -- sort of bright, with a playful banjo in the background. Something about the chords, though, makes it feel really sad to me. It's a good heartsick song about unrecquited love.

She took me into her mammy's house,
and treated me quite well,
The hair upon her shoulder
in jet black ringlets fell.
To try and paint her beauty,
I'm sure 'twould be in vain,
So handsome was my Creole girl,
By the lakes of Pontchartrain.

Angeles, Elliot Smith. Man, talk about heartsick songs... I love how bitter Elliot Smith is. Yay for bitter!

Honey Bee, Stevie Ray Vaughan. Oh, thank god. If another depressing song had come up, I'd have been breaking out the whiskey. Stevie's my main man.

* Twinkle & Shine, by Walt Mink, off of Miss Happiness.
* Scoop, by The Notwist, off of Neon Golden.
* Does Compute, by Division of Laura Lee, off of Das Not Compute.
* Suite no. 3 in C Major, BMV 1009: VI. Gigue, composed by J.S. Bach and performed by Yo-Yo Ma on Six Unaccompanied Cello Suites.

Merline Johnson - Don't You make Me High. A somewhat dirty blues song from the 20's that Maria Muldaur covered as 'Don't You feel My Leg' to good effect.

Dexter Gordon Quintet - Dexter Rides Again. Some soaring sax from one of the masters.

Sonny Boy Williamson - Pontiac Blues. Some down and dirty harmonica.

Rebel's Quartet - Jubilee's A-Comin'
. Rousing gospel that I hoovered off the WFMU blog.

Holmes Brothers - There's A Train. You ever hear that old cliche 'they could sing the phone book and it would sound good?' This set of Delta transplants to NYC are who it was created for.

I put all my mp3s into winamp and hit shuffle. The first five songs that came up say nothing about me. They're not really meaningful to me at all, which suggests I have too much music. (oh no, blasphemy!)

I put the directory that's just of the albums I've ripped in, rather than all my mp3s, and the only song that came up that was meaningful to me was The Pass. That one, along with Naveed, are powerful anti-suicide songs for me.

Music collection's at home—but my iPod's in my coat!
  1. Tool, Hooker with a Penis — The lyrics to which, copy-and-pasted, make their way into every textual discussion I have about artists "selling out."
  2. Radiohead, The National Anthem (live) — From their show in Berlin on 4 July 2000, one of the finest bootlegs I own, both for recording clairty and the sheer top-drawer performance the band gives.
  3. Cake, Sheep Go to Heaven — Was turned onto this song by a coffeeshop employee who flitered with me shamelessly one night in November '01. I should've gotten her phone number, but I was seventeen and still far too shy.
  4. Third Eye Blind, Tattoo of the Sun — I got this song from a girl I used to be very close to. I never associated it with her until after we stopped talking: "It's times like this that I dread / When there's everything to say / And nothing left to be said."
  5. Tegan and Sara, Empty in Between — These girls are so gorgeous, so talented, and so classy.

DJ Shadow - Dark Days (Main Theme)
Featuring either Saul Williams or Common (or both) on vocals. I picked this up off of some p2p server forever ago, and let Musicbrainz have its way with tagging it.

John Coltrane - Cousin Mary (Alt. Take)
This take sounds a bit funkier than I remember the "real" version sounding. I ♥ Giant Steps.

Jenny Lewis & The Watson Twins - Rise Up With Fists!!
I think this is the best song off the album.

Pearl Jam - Given To Fly
One of my favorites of theirs from the more recent albums. I actually drove from Portland to Missoula Montana with the flu to see these guys in 1998 based on the fact that they'd cancelled every show I'd tried to see up to that point. They played this song as I vaguely recall and dedicated it to all of the freeloaders sitting up on the hill behind whatever college is in Missoula.

Talking Heads - Heaven
Off of The Name Of This Band Is Talking Heads (so wonderful to finally have a non-bootleg version of that...)
Everyone is trying to get to the bar.
The name of the bar, the bar is called heaven.
The band in heaven plays my favorite song.
They play it once again, they play it all night long.

In case anyone is interested in listening along after the fact...

1. Jenny Lewis w/ the Watson twins "born secular" - as luck would have it, something I really like and listen to a lot come up #1. Also my celebrity crush from the "crush" thread. This song is about lack of belief, yet it sounds very gospel. One particular line I love the way it sounds: "it's the way mothers greet their sons, when its a moment too late..."

The Watson twins by themselves are good too, just ordered their EP.

2. ELO "showdown" - No clue. One day I heard "turn to stone" on the radio and decided to download a bunch of ELO. I probably liked the title but never listened to it.

3. AC/DC "high voltage" - Bon Scott AC/DC- what's not to like?

4. Bonnie Tyler "Total Eclipse of the Heart" - I like to call this one the "dumb girl national anthem" - if you've ever been to a bar or club or karaoke when it came on, you know why. Nevertheless, a good song. Also, I once had an idea about a comedy sketch where Bonnie Tyler went to work at an observatory, and she insisted that none of her co-workers make any lame jokes about "seeing a total eclipse of the heart" through the telescope, but then there actually was a a total eclipse of the heart, and Bonnie Tyler had to
save the world from it.

I never wrote it though.

5. Pulp "monday morning" - love Pulp, don't know this one. If you want to be really sad though, i recommend "born to cry" or "a little soul."

1) Steriogram* - Roadtrip
2) The White Stripes - Now Mary
3) Jane's Addiction - Mountain Song
4) Catherine Wheel - Texture
5) The Breeders - Do You Love Me Now?**

*I made out with the guitarist of this band outside The Viper Room
**I would like to cover this song

1) Vitalic - Trahison
Dark techno, not quite EBM. It's good music to walk around to.

2) Low - Over the Ocean (skull valley mix, off of "owL")
For some reason, I really love remixes of Low songs.

3) Swans - Blood Promise
I swear, when I die, I want to be listening to a Swans song. Not this one; "My Buried Child" or "Goddamn The Sun" would be better.

4) Mum - The Land Between Solar Systems
This song makes me feel fuzzy inside

5) Tycho - Dream as Memory
I think the kids call this "ambient". It's great.

1 - Flying Saucer Attack - The Rezillos

This won't surprise anyone who listens to my Radio Mecha sets. A great pop band.

2 - Obstacle 2 - Interpol

Another cracker.

3 - Don't Stop Now - Lemon Jelly

Can't say I care for this album much.

4 - Radio PWEI - Pop Will Eat Itself

I loved PWEI at the time. Much mocked but great fun and great live. Now Clint does soundtracks - who woulda thunk it.

5 - I've Got A Flair - Fountains of Wayne

Need I say more.

Me loves instrumental rock.

2. Sabrina Malheiros - "Estacao Verao"

Something I downloaded from a Brazilian singer who did a track I liked on a blog somewhere. Don't know much about it.

3. Flaming Lips - Free Radicals

New album. Don't know much about it yet.

4. Clogs - I'm Very Sad

More instrumental rock, more chamber-y this time.

5. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Fancy

New album. I love this album, but probably not as much as "Fever to Tell". Yeah, and all you people who hate the YYYs can suck it in advance.

Dvorak - Symphony 9 - III
Dvorak's New World Symphony. I like all four movements, but the 2nd's my favorite, then 4th, then 1st.

Schumann - Kinderszenen - Traumerei
This piano piece shows up in many movies and a few commercials to boot. Don't listen to this much, anymore.

Trilok Gurtu - Law Years
Can't really describe this one except as dissonant in a nice way, but I listen to it somewhat regularly.

Hemant Kumar - Hai Apna Dil To Aawara
Vintage Bollywood (1958); every now and then.

Beethoven - Piano Sonata 21 - II
The profound 2nd "movement" of the 'Waldstein' sonata, but properly speaking, it is an introduction for the sublime 3rd movement, and should be listened to, in that capacity.

1. Lisa Germano - Bruises - courtesy of somebody's YSI and I don't know if I like it or not.
2. Violent Femmes - Gone Daddy Gone - a classic, of course. Sometimes nothing will do but the Femmes.
3. Robert Earl Keene - Think It Over One Time - I love Robert Earl in general and this song in particular.
4. Stevie Nicks - Stand Back - because Weretable YSIed it.
5. Gillian Welch - Caleb Meyer - this is one of my all time favorites, a really haunting ballad about rape, blood, death, revenge, ghosts: in other words, just a little light pick me up for a Tuesday afternoon.

Then, of course, I slowly become aware that the music currently playing isn't the Femmes at all & realize yet again that my copy of Winamp is possessed, which would be why it suddenly decided to play Ian Hunter, Once Bitten Twice Shy. Go figure.

3. Organ Donor - Lefties Soul Connection. I think I got this off some MP3 blog. It's pretty damn weird.
4. Mince Meat - Dangerdoom - Mouse and the Mask. Got a cool backing track, sounds like a Mortal Kombat stage.
5. Billy Boy - Oscar Peterson Trio. Hiss blingity hiss hiss piannnnoooOOO.

Skweetis
by The Melvins
on Stoner Witch
Comment: One of my favorite Melvins albums. King Buzzo is a lyrical genius. Dale Crover scares me in his underwear.

2 Towers
by Lightning Bolt
on Wonderful Rainbow
Comment: One of three Lighting Bolt albums I own. Great song. It's on a mix of mine about architecture / buildings. I saw them in a Polish disco club. It was an excellent experience.

The Other Side Of Town
by Steve Earle
on El Corazón
Comment: The Woody Guthrie song makes me cry. This one's OK.

The Deluxe War Baby
by Burning Airlines
on Identikit
Comment: I have this single on vinyl. I don't think the album lives up to it, but it's not bad overall. I've never seen J.Robbins play despite being a big Jawbox fan when I was younger (and liking Burning Airlines and Channels for the most part, too).

Fall Of The Star High School Running Back
by The Mountain Goats
on All Hail West Texas
Comment: This is a wonderfully tragic narrative song from the Mountain Goats who of course specialize in that kind of thing. This might be my second favorite album of his. I guess I vouch for them live.

The Flaming Lips are really Autumn music for me, and this Fall, I just didn't feel like listening to them.

I always figured I was the only person who felt like certain bands belonged to a certain "season." Cool.

Anyway, on my MP3 player:

Modest Mouse "Satin In A Coffin"- the best song on their last album. Kind of drunk and shouty sounding.

The Apples In Stereo "Love You Alice" I'm a sucker for anything this band did.

Oingo Boingo "Fool's Paradise" That whole album (Dead Man's Party) is an 80s classic, and reminds me of my college years.

Kelly Hogan "(You Don't Know) The First Thing About Blue" Hogan was an Atlanta girl who relocated to Chicago- she sings like a dirty angel, and my partner is madly in love with her. :)

The Buzzcocks "Why Can't I Touch It?" I really don't know what to say about this one- the Buzzcocks were one of my "gateway" punk bands, along with the Damned, bridging me from pop music to punk.

Por Deus por favor - Nelson Sargento (oooh I love this song... my favorite sambista gets downright metaphysical in this crooning ballad... I never thought I'd say this but the flute is perfect)

Nothing's Too Much (Nothing's Too Good) - Billy Young (this song has the greatest Hammond organ burst ever, right between the two iterations of the first verse... also, I love how it builds up, then plateaus at the bridge, which it carries until fadeout... it never returns to the verse -- Exciting! Miss anything? Listen again!)

She's My Scorcher - Toots and the Maytals (early Toots, and on this one, like "Pressure Drop," Toots almost sounds like he's jogging in place... what a voice!)

I Played the Fool - Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes (My very favorite Southside Johnny song... give it a listen)

Big Leg Blues - Mississippi John Hurt (Check out these lyrics: Ain't sleepin', my back and shoulders tired / Ain't sleepin', my back and shoulders tired / Ain't sleepin' my back and shoulders tired -- Gon' turn over, try on the other side." Then later he acuses her of infidelity, says he saw her "faroe gon' up the right-of-way." I love Mississippi John Hurt)

BONUS

Okay, so it's only supposed to be five, but Dwight Yoakam's singing "Stop the World and Let Me Off" even as I write. Love it.

Ethiopiques - Tezeta (ysi)
Devendra Banhart - Wake Up, Little Sparrow
Arab Strap - Love Detective
The Now Time Delegation - Hangin' Tree
The Bottle Rockets - Nancy Sinatra

Interesting: "Tezeta" means "a bittersweet longing for the past", which I learned from a web site called tezeta.org about Ethiopia. I found out about the great Ethiopiques collections (article, volumes) here at mecha, from dobbs. Thanks, dobbs!

1. "Who Will Save" - Escaflowne: The Movie Soundtrack
An instrumental piece composed by the incomparable Yoko Kanno.

2. "Kick Out the Chairs" - Munk feat. James Murphy and Nancy Wang (DFA)
I have no idea exactly where I got this from, but I'll bet it was from here.

3. "What' Cha Gonna Do???" - Escaflowne: The Movie Soundtrack
I wish you guys could hear this. It's so cute and fun.

4. "Super Drive" - Yousuke Sakanoue
I had to go out into the living room to tell who who really did this song because it came up as Various Artists in WMP.

5. "Walk Through the Fire" - The Cast Of Buffy The Vampire Slayer
Yes, I have the whole CD. You know you want it, too.

Obviously, my computer's in a J-pop and soundtrack mood.

*stops sulking, reappears*

Here I Dreamt I Was An Architect, The Decemberists
The most swoon-worthy and most beautiful song of longing that Mr. Meloy has yet written, I think.

Teddy Roosevelt's Guns, Thee Silver Mt. Zion Orchestra
GSYB side project

Armalite Rifle, Gang of Four
The first Go4 I ever heard, still blisters to this day.

Cass McCombs, I Went to the Hospital
"I want to be famous for falling in love."

What's That You See, Radiohead (as On a Friday, from the 1990 demos)
Once you stop laughing, it is possible to discern the seeds of brilliance. It takes a generous ear, though.

Frequency Ass Bandit

1. Hot Chocolate - "Emma" - I love the slow bassline and the background "ahhhhs". Actually, I love everything about this song, it's a longtime fave.

2. Placebo - "Black Eyed" - The Placebo singles collection is one of my go-to discs when I don't know what else I want to play.

3. Cheap Trick - "Saturday At Mignight" - I'm in the minority of people that like "One on One" and "Next Position Please" as much as the first four Cheap Trick albums.

4. Shins - "Caring Is Creepy" - I'm not as high on the Shins as many other folks, but this song is pretty great. Subdued and elegant.

5. XTC - "Everyday Sotry of a Small Town" - My favorite band of all time - and a great song from Big Express. The odds of XTC coming in shuffle are pretty great since just about every XTC song is loaded.

I lucked out with that round of Shuffle Roulette - I actually stand behind each of those songs. Nothing very challenging or eclectic, but a fine batch of tunes.

The Cure - "Just Like Heaven" - This song makes me all gooey inside. It's also devastatingly effective in strip clubs when the dancer has the Suicide Girls look.. yah. TMI.

Dresden Dolls - "Sex Changes" - Picked this up last week. I'm cross with myself for never having gone to see them when I lived in Boston & they were starting out. And yes, between the Cure and this, I like piano-based pop songs. Sue me.

Travelling Wilburys - "7 Deadly Sins" - From the second album, which is inferior to the first, owing to the loss of Roy Orbison. This one is a filler track, too. Oh well.

Jawbreaker - "West Bay Invitational" - One of the reasons I love this song is that it is a light palate-cleansing song after 30 minutes of wrenching rawness in the preceeding songs on the album. I like the sweetness of the lyrics about "Chris got a pony keg of loose charm" and later "We hung our clothes up on the floor / and put our faith in a closed door".

TMBG - Particle Man - This song reminds me of being outside of a TMBG show when I was 17, and running into my first real crush from three years earlier. (It was mutual, but at 14, living 20 miles apart was insurmountable) Like an electric shock, it was. I was with a date, so we couldn't talk, we just locked eyes. I never saw her again.

Nelly Furtado--Island of Wonder -- a duet with Caetano Veloso : >
Nina Simone--Turning Point -- little girl learns her friend can't come over==hokey but it's nina. : >
New Order--Everything's Gone Green -- not one of their best lyricswise at all, but the music is excellent (it's a better song to dance to than to listen to) -- it reminds me of being at Area
--oh, all Ns so far--
Turin Brakes--Come and Go (with hidden track)--it's a 2-fer! : > Come and Go's great--very cool song, like a mix of rickie lee jones or beautiful south or someone like that, with an undercurrent of danger and an off-key/off-kilter something providing a real umphh, and degenerating into what sounds bloody and very very sad to me. Then there's like 2 or 3 minutes of silence, then them talking (studio talk?) over beautiful soundtrackish music which reminds me exactly of the part in the ABC song (forever together?) where they go "sleep. no. ...sleep. no. ...", but more broody and noodly. Oh, one of them sounds almost cockney. : >

Yes - Long Distance Runaround - I cannot stand this band, anymore. Down with prog rock! I knew this would happen. I suspect the remaining four songs will also be things I hate from bands I no longer listen to. That's what you get for never throwing anything out, I guess.
Immortal Technique - Battle vs. Postaboy - You know, he's not a bad MC, but damn if there weren't a ton of better indie acts eminem could have brought into the spotlight. well, at least he's better than 50 "I don't deserve all my fame and money" Cent.
Fiona Apple - Get Him Back - I sing this song to myself when I need to boost my self esteem regarding a recent breakup. The leaked version of this album far surpasses the retail release.
Atmosphere - Saves The Day - Possibly my favorite group in the world, right now. I'm mercurial about these things, but either way Ant and Slug are one of the best things happening in hip hop right now, and this song is one of the reasons why. whoopee!
Gang Starr - Full Clip - Ha. I swear, I listen to things other than Hip Hop. Either way, gang starr earned their respect for a reason. I'm not listening to them every day or anything, but they're legends.

1. Nue No Koku Goro- Kaggra
This song's title means "When the Nue Cries." Nue are birds. I got this J-rock song from my sister. She likes Kaggra because his lyrics are inspired by classical Japanese literature and are written in female voice (the grammar indicates that the speaker is female). I like it a lot.

2. Kisses in the Rain- Rick Braun
This is a jazz song that came with my iBook.

3. Strangelove- Depeche Mode
I love Strangelove! Classic Depeche Mode always makes me happy.

4. Sovay- Unknown
I downloaded this but didn't take down any information. It's an old Irish song about a woman who disguises herself and tries to rob her boyfriend of the engagement ring he's bringing to her, so she can test his love for her. There is a version by Touchwood where the lyrics go: "I'd have pulled the trigger, I'd have pulled the trigger and shot you dead" if the boyfriend had given up the ring. Harsh.

5. Kiss Kiss- Tarkan
This came with my computer also. It's a Turkish pop song. I looked at his Web site and he's a hottie. RAR.

Two of these aren't mine, so here are the next two songs on shuffle that were:

* Step Into My Office, Baby- Belle and Sebastian
This is a cute, bouncy, and cheery song that's also a little melancholy.

* Fishheads- They Might Be Giants
The first time I ever heard this song was in junior high. I didn't hear it again for years, and wasn't even sure if it really existed. My favorite part is the one in the middle where they yell "Roly poly fishheads are never seen drinking cappucino in Italian restaurants with Oriental women! Yeah."

Jordrok (Anglagard) ... sorry, there are umlauts and things over some of those words which I lack the patience to figure out how to type... euro-prog

Vox (Extended) (Sarah McLachlan) ... possibly my favorite song of hers

To Salt a Scar (The Gentle Waves) ... dunno much about this, think they have something to do with Belle & Sebastian

Black Utopia (Derek Sherinian) ... prog keyboardist, was in Dream Theater and Platypus

Right My Wrong (Sprung Monkey) ... umm. a little like At the Drive In? I think... haven't listened to this much.

Pretty typical for me, although there's no jazz in that mix.
