I just got my laptop fixed, with a brand new HD... So, I need to cram it full of crap. What are the programs (esp. freeware) on your system on which your life depends? Also, radio, for just a little while.[More:]Just for kicks, I've now got XP Pro with the Mac shell. It's pretty sweet and makes me feel slightly more geeky.
Actually, that's it for the radio. Friend coming over, hose a wreck. You know how it is. Thanks mats, wolfdaddy, trishalynn, and you other beautiful listeners!

Not necessarily freeware, but neat tools that I've found myself relying on day in/day out.

Paint Shop Pro (hmm, didn't realize Corel somehow aquired it from JASC?)

O&O Derfrag - amazing defrag program.

All I can think of off the top of my head.

Better File Rename.

BSPlayer - very nice lightweight video player.

ffdshow - a large collection of codecs; you might want to supplement this with kazaalite's codec pack, if it's still available.

GSpot Codec Information Appliance - if a video won't play because you don't have to codec and WMPlayer can't find one for you, this'll tell you what you need. Also gives good information on your vid files.

DBPowerAmp - awesome converter for audio files.

TMPGEnc - solid video converter/fixer. Useful if you want to burn your own set-top-DVD-playable DVDs sometimes.

ISOBuster - solid ISO/image manipulating program.

Sequoiaview - displays the contents of your harddrive, graphically, by size & type. Useful for figuring out what to delete/stuff that you've forgotten.

Grisoft AVG - decent free antivirus software.

Bit Tornado - I don't have any complaints about this Bittorrent client.

Limewire - reasonable P2P software.

Random stuff from MS; cleartype tuner, tweakui, &c. Useful.

GoldWave - lightweight but feature-full audio editor.

Memtest86 - if something with your computer is wonky and you want to figure out if bad RAM is the culprit, turn to this handy util.

Motherboard Monitor - displays information from your motherboard's temperature sensors, if it's available.

Quicktime Alternative and Real Alternative are free codecs to replace quicktime & real's codec's, spyware, and bloatware.

WhoLockMe is something that you can use when you can't delete a file and want to figure out what's preventing you from doing so.

CCleaner - clears temporary and random garbage files that accumulates.

Of course, there's Firefox/Mozilla/Thunderbird/Filezilla, Spybot Search & Destroy, Lavasoft AdAware, Winamp (version 2 is reasonably featured and LITE! FAST! Non-BLOAT!), &c&c.
