yay for Christine Quinn! and boo for the AOH bigots, and every politician who marched with those bigots.

... Ms. Quinn's decision came as John Dunleavy, the parade chairman, touched off a new controversy by comparing Irish gay activists to neo-Nazis and the Ku Klux Klan. In an interview yesterday in The Irish Times, Mr. Dunleavy was quoted as saying, "If an Israeli group wants to march in New York, do you allow neo-Nazis into their parade? If African-Americans are marching in Harlem, do they have to let the Ku Klux Klan into their parade?"

The print edition of this article in today's NY Times also includes this paragraph which does not appear in the on-line version:

He added that "people have rights," and that if the parade allowed Irish gay men and lesbians, "is the Irish Prostitute Association next?" ...

On behalf of all right-thinking Irish-Americans everywhere, I offer my heartfelt apologies for Dunleavy's stupidity and bigotry.

(now, we can return to celebrating the Day in the proper way, by imbibing obscene quantities of Guinness and Jamesons.)

And everyone's welcome to march in our parade. Near as I can tell, the only major rule is no smoking or drinking while it's going on.

(not much respect for the AOH myself since one of them tossed his dignified and religious cookies on my shoes at a parade some years back, and I saw he had been drinking green beer, of all things!)

I know they're assholes and i know they're old men and i know they don't want Irish gays and lesbians marching, but this is the worst shit ever. Every year they say no, but they don't spout this stuff equating us with Neo-nazis, the Klan and prostitutes. Also, since when are gay and lesbian Irish people no longer Irish? His examples are hateful bullshit, and he got a very big audience with all the coverage of this.

You don't lose your nationality when you come out. And i was brought up to believe that on St. Patrick's Day everyone was Irish, so come and enjoy. That was the message this day used to send. I guess that's not true any longer.
