27 March 2006

I need a vacation! [More:]I just got back from dropping George's sister off at the airport. We crammed so much into six days and I am exhausted.

Kew Gardens
Piccadilly Circus
Trafalgar Square
The National Gallery
Rod Stewart's house (a couple of miles from my place - we peeked through the woods at it, he wasn't home.)
A theatre trip to see Mamma Mia
Greensted Church in Essex (the oldest wooden building in the world, built in the 9th century, and with a crusader buried in the graveyard)
Finchingfield (the most picturesque village in England)
Great Dunmow (a traditional Essex town)
Greenwich, south London (where we toured the 17th century Royal Naval College)
Canary Wharf (showed her where I work)
Another theatre trip to see Mary Poppins
Afternoon tea in a proper English tea shop (cucumber sandwiches, scones, etc.)
Shopping for souvenirs
A day at the Essex coast (Frinton-on-Sea and Walton-on-the-Naze) where we had fish 'n' chips and a '99' (which is a soft whip ice cream with a Cadbury's chocolate flake in it).

I absolutely HATE all the Central London tourist stuff. God, it's so filthy and crowded, but Diane loved that, coming from a farm in Ohio it was exciting for her. The best bit for me was the ancient church and the seaside.

I missed you guys, I hardly had time to check my email, never mind schmooze with you folks.
Trafalgar Square and Rod Stewart's house are the only things on there that I recognize. By my criteria, that is an awesome vacation. Hope you recover quickly!

I saw a wicked documentary on TVO (Ontario's public station, sorta like PBS) about Kew Gardens. It looks like an amazing spot.

Kew is fantastic, but huge. Impossible to see everything in a day. The giant ferns are amazing.

Quick tip to anyone who wants to get the whole sightseeing shit out of the way as quickly as possible: go on the London Eye, optionally go to the Tate Modern, wander across the Millenium Bridge, have a gander at St Pauls, have a pub lunch, go home. In a few hours you've seen all of London and it's only cost a few quid. Lovely.

Clearly Jan is much more conscientious than me.

Any pictures to show us?

Those riverboat trips from Westminster are a pretty good way of seeing a good chunk of London on a sunny day, too.

Pics will follow later, I loved the painted hall and the chapel at Greenwich, they are amazing. I need to sort them out on my camera and will post a few later.
