Call me! Inspired by sciurus's thread, I did some research...[More:]
This free voice mail service was the best I could find. I did a little third-party investigating and it appears legit. It is a free service that provides an anonymous voice mail box; the owner of the box will hear advertisiting when retrieving messages, but the caller gets no ads. I did not have to give any personally identifiable information about myself during the setup. Pretty sweet deal.

My voice mail number is 206-312-1915. Call me! And set up yours!
Of course, if calls to the 206 area code normally cost you money, it won't be free for you...

This is too cool - thanks jon! Make with the numbers, people!

Call me call me call me! I can't stay online, but I can check messages and make phone calls at lunch! I'm wearing my bunny pin because I love you all so much!

206.984.6996!

Oh yeah, it's got a 69 in it, baby.

I called and went through the whole setup, and it asked me to try calling my own number to test it. They repeated it 3 times so I made sure I wrote down the wrong number. When I called it, it said "I'm sorry, your call cannot be completed as dialed." I am dialing from the 206 area code so I tried all variations on the number (1.206.xxx.xxxx, 206.xxx.xxxx, and xxx.xxxx) and got the same problem with each one. Anyone else have this?

Awwww crap, tilda, that sucks! Mine worked perfectly the first time. Maybe try again? I know the setup takes a little while, but I want to call you!

FWIW, I'm dialing 206.xxx.xxxx from my cell phone, but I'm not coming from within the 206 area code.

I am totally going to have to do this at home. Placing sexy anonymous phone calls from work would be kinda creepy.

I'm getting blank messages from y'all. not very flattering. :(

Ooh, call me! 206.312.8787.

But, um, while checking it to make sure it worked, the system told me I had two new messages. One of them was me trying to get my password to work. The other was a message three weeks old that said, "Chris, this is Herb. Just trying to catch you."

So, um, don't leave any too identifiable info, because there's something screwy in the mix.

Thanks, mudpuppie - good to know. I'm sure they recycle the numbers once a box expires. I'm a little surprised they don't clean it out first, but you get what you pay for, I guess.

I hereby promise to delete all your messages myself before allowing my box to expire.

No one's getting any calls from me until evening hours, US West Coast time. It'll give you something to look forward to.
posted by matildaben 07 March | 14:42
Yes, I may have to call you all after work or risk getting caught using yet another employer-provided resource for pure fun and games! But this is a fun idea.

Ditto.

I hope everyone is waiting till after work, because otherwise I'm really disappointed with the turnout here! I'm normally not the pouty type, but if people are skipping this voluntarily, they don't know what they're missing. I giggle gleefully every time I get a new message. This is way fun, people! Join in! Please?

If you're worried about anonymity, don't be. The setup only asks you for age, gender, and zip code, and you could easily fake those if you want - they are only used to target which short ad you will hear when you check your messages. Mudpuppie noted that the messages may not be deleted when a box is transferred to a new user - so just don't leave a message for anyone identifying yourself by full name and credit card number.

Holy crap, jonmc has a sexy voice. Like a late-night DJ that's all yours and nobody else's.

The other one of my 2 messages was a hangup, though. C'mon, people!

I'll be checking later to give you all time to get home from work.

*blushes furiously*

Damn, along with my tune-spinnin' skills, maybe I should become a DJ.

jon: I fully agree with matildaben. Don't be wasting that kind of talent. You even sound rock'n'roll.

Mike9322 has that "I could talk to this guy for hours" relaxed-voice thing going. Also very nice!

Thanks, Mike. You made the phone fun again!

Oh well. I'll always have Herb...

pupp and tilda: I'll be calling you later. I had to leave work and now I'm hanging out with the kid. Stand by!

I did get mike's message and he is workin' that laconic thing quite nicely. Thanks for the well-wishes, too, hoss.

(I've been calling everybody 'hoss' lately. Maybe I've watching too many Bonanza reruns)

I just called y'all! LEt me know if you didn't get the message. For some reason, there are a lot of 'hang-ups'.
