Lawn and garden questions inside [More:]Does anyone has experience with natural lawn care? I didn't put anything on my lawn last year, since we had adopted a dog and didn't want to expose her. But this spring I'm feeling the draw of the advertisers and lawn-care columnists, and am wondering how safe Scotts really is. My front lawn is in decent shape, but the back is torn up from the maniac dog running around when we play, so I'd like to reseed and do some fertilizing (plus it'll help battle the crabgrass and other broad-leafs).

I was thinking I could fertilize on a day when the dog is off at day care, to limit her exposure. But if there's a more organic way that won't cost me my first-born, I'd love to hear about it.

Also - what are MeChatters planting this year? Anything cool? Early planting is almost here in my zone, so I've got some lettuce and onions and potatoes planned. And more typical veggies once the danger of frost passes - maters, green beans, cukes, hot peppers.

What else should I plant??
cannabis sativa.

Dude, I know. But the p-in-laws come by all the freaking time. Believe me, I know . . . it'd solve a lot of our frustrations . . .

I'm moving to an apartment in May where I'm going to have my own patch of dirt to farm. I can't wait. But I have no idea what I'm going to do with it yet, so I'm really no help.

By the way, don't believe any of that New Orleans mulch horsepuckey that's being forwarded around. (Not that you did.)

You sound like a do-it-yourselfer so maybe I'm not helping, but I'll mention Natural Lawn of America for your lawn anyway. They did my lawn when I lived in my house, were reasonably priced, all organic and safe, and I can say honestly that I had the nicest looking lawn in the neighborhood. All I did was water and mow. FWIW.

Looks like it's time to link to my favourite lawn care page again!

Organic Lawn Care for the Cheap & Lazy

I love this guy's approach.

Thanks richat, that looks promising. He uses a Ringer Lawn Restore fertilizer that I can definitely dig. Now to find some around here!

And thanks mike9322, but no locations around me. There is an organic lawn care dude, but I would rather do it myself, yup.

BUT what are y'all planting?? Anyone try garlic? Any cool tomato hybrids to look for??

We're not planting anything exciting BUT we are putting in a fancy schmancy new veggie garden. Replacing the chicken wire with a picket fence and putting in raised beds. Woo hoo!

Our lawn, on the other hand, is horrid. It just doesn't respond to anything. But I got some new suggestions from richat's link, so maybe this year will be better.

jrossi4r - have you tried mowing with a reel mower? It's so much better for the grass - cuts, as opposed to tearing, andcreates its own compost - and you get a workout without the annoying roar of an engine puking pollution into the air!

tr33hggr-I'd love to use a reel mower, but we've got a pretty big yard (about 1.5 acres) and it's really hilly (the house is actually built into the hill), so it's not really an option. The problem, really, is that the people that owned the property before we moved in totally neglected the place. It's going to take a few years of TLC to counteract the damage done.

(And don't even get me started on what they did to the trees. A few big old ones are beyond saving and will have to come down. It breaks my heart to cut down an old tree!)

Don't bother with the fertilizer. Your lawn doesn't need it and neither does your dog.

Maybe try making compost tea and spraying it on the lawn? (I made some and sprayed it on my veggies last summer. Swear to god the stuff is like steroids.)

I planted a buncha tomatoes a couple days ag. Found this great site that has gardeners' reviews of the cultivars.
