I'm currently preparing income tax returns three days (at least) a week, ten to eleven hours each day. The accountant I am working with (lawyers can't be "partners" with accountants; it's a legal thing) has about 700 individual returns to do; the minimum fee is $250 for the federal and one state return, and I get 1/4 of each return I prepare.
I love income taxes.
And sasshat - you don't really want a big refund; that just means the Treasury had more of your money for the whole year.
I had $1000 withheld, I'm getting a measly 100 bucks.
I made very little money this year, considering my gross income up to July was 4 grand.
Then again, I've been spoiled by studenthood, which allowed me to get all my withheld back every year...I guess I'm a "grown up" now that the Gov is screwing me out of my money.
I never look forward to filing taxes even if I know I'm getting a refund.
What's most upsetting to me is dealing with Multnomah County's (Portland, OR) income tax; I do the upstanding, tax-paying citizen thing so we can continue to fund our jails, schools, and elderly care facilities (with this soon-to-be discontinued county income tax). Meanwhile, I specifically know people have at the least *said* they are not going to file these taxes. I also know a former part-time resident who skipped out (moved) on paying the income tax with a cavalier almsot-impunity.
I will now remember this is life and it is rarely fair. [/whine] Happy Tax Season everyone!
I'm not even going to bring up how much I owe. Let's just say I neglected to change my W4 from married/5 when I split up with my wife last year. Oops. I'm really, really stupid sometimes.
Got my taxes all done, just waiting for my student loan intrest form and then I'll be able to send them off. A modest amount is coming back, a bit less than I was hoping for but at least I'm not short.
I get mad thinking about where my taxes are going. I'd gladly pay more if I knew my taxes were helping my fellow citizens and not lining the pockets of the rich.
And the argument that the rich being richer helps my country doesn't hold water.
