Moonbird will be on the news tonight. If you had a camera and lights in your face RIGHT NOW, what would you say?
(I'm on as a spokesperson for our funky spiritual community here in Asheville. Our minister is turning in his ordination over being prohibited from blessing same-sex unions, which I of course am quite proud of. It's the local ABC affiliate. Film, as they say, at 11. We expect this story to get quite big).
"How does it feel to be working in a soulless, dead end career in an industry long gone irrelevant and soon to be extinct? Ha Ha HA! KILL YOUR TELEVISION!!"
I know... I actually hate the TeeVee. I told the reporter I never actually *watch* the local tv news, and she, in a rather whoring way, said that the channel she works for sucks. It does. Then she went on to be a report-o-drone.
But I've got to admit, the way they did the whole soft-light Barbara Wawa things with me was pretty cool. I thought I wouldn't come off well at all.
I've been on the local news twice in the last few years. First time was in Austin when I was eating alone at the hip, healthy 24-hour diner at 5AM only a few weeks after Sept. 11th. They interviewed a few people, but they sat down at the table and talked with me for a couple minutes because my GF's brother was killed in the WTC. I didn't expect to be nervous, but I was a little bit.
Then, late 04 when I had just moved here and been here only a few days, I got accosted by a newswoman while I was waiting at a traffic light. Seems they had just installed one of those picture things for catching people running red lights and they wanted reactions. Actually, I think they wanted outrage. I happened to know that the intersection was the most dangerous in Albuquerque and I told her I thought it was a good idea and asked, "Isn't this the most dangerous intersection in town?" and she was like, "Um, yes, I think". "Well, then" I said "Makes sense doesn't it?" And then the light turned green. She had her entire torse in my car through the passenger window.
I didn't bother to try to see either interview when they were on the news. Kinda wish I had, though.
