What will vegans say?
posted by arse_hat 28 March | 00:23
This vegan says "what a hilarious hoax".
posted by cmonkey 28 March | 00:48
I doubt it's a hoax as hospitals have been growing human skin for grafts for more than a decade. A number of years ago they were able to grow mouse parts for transplant. So how hard can it be to grow "meat"?

This is almost as gripping as the debate of the pro spoon-guard and anti-spoon guard factions!

I'm guessing that if it wasn't a hoax, Google would have more than four results for it.

And the photo on the flyer is so totally photoshopped.

Shut up pie! What do you deserts know of meat? hmmm?

cmonkey, searching "Henk Haagsman" or "In vitro meat" gets lots of returns, and there's a wiki article.

The story I want to hear, though, is who are these people with enough money to make a serious funding offer who want to eat themselves?

Home chefs could make meat in a countertop device the size of a coffee maker. Before bed, throw starter cells and a package of growth medium into the meat maker and wake up to harvest fresh sausage for breakfast.

Yeah right, file under jetpacks, personal nuclear generators, and affordable everyday spaceflight.

Growing a test-tube steak or pork roast will be more challenging, said Henk Haagsman, professor of meat sciences at the University of Utrecht.

How cool would it be to meet someone in a bar and be able to say, "Why yes, I am a professor of meat science."

I read where they've just spliced C. elegans genes into a pig in order to create an omega-3-fatty-acid-enriched pig. That's right, your pork is part worm.

Anyone remember the "sligs" from "Heretics of Dune"? Part slugs, part pig, ALL DELICIOUS.

Man. Now I want to simmer me down some Meat Tube Bourguignon.

Yikes! Makes me wonder if the "Meat Creation" sticker at the supermarket wasn't just goofy Japanese English sloganism...

This is powered by cold fusion, right?

Anybody read "Oryx and Crake?" This is a lot like that (which is a lot like "Brave New World" and less lots like "1984").

I was working in the dining hall at RIT in the 70s when Sizzlean (Move over bacon!) was first introduced. Little did I know I was witnessing the dawn of the manufactured meat era.

LunaticFringe, thanks for the suggestion. Sounds intriguing.
