Help me move on with my life ...after graduation.[More:]
I just got a great job offer from a company in San Antonio, TX. My significant other (we're pretty much engaged-to-be-engaged) has decided he wants to attend UT-Austin graduate school in the fall. Furthermore, he just can't live without me. He'd also like to live relatively close to campus, since he reasons he'll be keeping non-standard hours. I've never really worked farther than 10 minutes away from home before, and my impression is that traffic in San Antonio is "pretty erratic", especially on the 410 loop.

I'd like to hear from people who have, perhaps, made this commute daily before. What about if we lived in between? (maps.google is showing San Marcos as about a third of the way closer) Will I shortly lose the will to live (as I suspect), or is it a pretty common commute? FWIW, I'm currently living in LA, so I have a pretty high bar for "bad traffic."
i'm not a driver, but don't you want to experience living downtown in a walkable neighborhood/city at all?

"Walkable" doesn't really apply to Texas cities.

I do! That's the disagreement... my best idea is to live in San Antonio (which has a very nice downtown area, IMO) and see him on the weekends. He's pretty upset about the whole thing - he alternates between wanting to live somewhere in between or trying to convince me to get a job in Austin, or take a year off and apply at the grad school, or something else entirely. I'm trying to compromise.

I already commented there, but I'll advise against living in San Antonio. I lived in the area for almost ten years and it sucks. Sucks sucks sucks. Austin/San Marcos are infinitely more livable.

If you'd like any advice on the little bedroom towns between SA and Austin, feel free to email. I know the area quite well.

I think you should do what you want first, and try San Antonio for a while by yourself, seeing him weekends or whatever--he'll have more free time than you so let him come up when he can.
