Ask MeCha: Is an externship employment? I did an externship one summer for which I earned school credit. I worked at city hall, but I did not get paid for it. Now I have to list all of my former employers on a form - does the externship count?
Preferably, it wouldn't count.

it doesn't have to, but i'd count it if i needed to pump up my experience, esp if it's related to what you're doing or want.

I thought the standard was compensation in kind - that is, being paid in credit hours was enough to meet the standard. But I think that is a way to rationalize including it as a job if you desire it to be so.

But I don't think the IRS would look at it that way. In fact, I would argue that unless you received a W2 or the company has an I-9 on file for you, it wasn't a job.

It's for a bar exam application, if that makes a difference. I got credit from my school, not the city, so I don't know if I could say that I was paid in-kind. I guess I should just err on the side of caution and include it, though.

Heh, I don't think credits from a city would be much good (could one eventually graduate from a city?). Kidding aside, did you pay for the credit hours? Perhaps if you paid for the credit hours yourself, city hall didn't really pay you anything. But if you didn't have to pay for the credit hours, then I think it really would be payment-in-kind.

But, yeah, I've heard it's best to just divulge everything for the Bar.

I guess I paid tuition for the credit hours (or will pay, thank goodness for student loans).

Yeah, this is me being lazy. You're right, I need to be safe and divulge it.

When did they start calling them externships? I've heard this term elsewhere; I have no idea why the term "internship" does not apply to such positions.

I've wondered that myself, Doohickie. I read that an externship is shorter than an internship, but this one lasted a summer and I know I've herad of "summer internships." I dunno.
