10 March 2006

Okay, so I took a nap, right? And I set my alarm to go off for 15 minutes before I was supposed to go on the air.

Would have worked like a charm, too ... had I lived in the Eastern time zone.

Sorry, y'alls.
We were worried about you! Come to IRC and share the love.

I'm there now. And much love to urbanwhaleshark who graciously yielded up his set.

Radio 1976 is now in da house!

posted by amberglow 10 March | 23:00
Ah, well I'm going off the top 100 songs of the year list, so perhaps they didn't stay #1 long enough to make the top 40?

Yeah, they were #67 for the year. Sorry hunny.

Oh *I* went thru the 70s with them, but unless you want me to increase my sets to 100 songs a night ... we'll sadly be Bay City Roller-less

(i never heard of that place)
posted by amberglow 10 March | 23:25
Well there's different Billboard charts ... singles, albums, pop, etc. Does the billboard magazine site itself archive its charts? I haven't been able to find any there when I've looked...

Fly, amber, fly!
posted by WolfDaddy 10 March | 23:28

*dances around the room, even tho fly robin fly is 75*
posted by amberglow 10 March | 23:30
Do you use usenet, amber? That's WAY better than the p2p services for finding obscure/international music.
posted by WolfDaddy 10 March | 23:34
maybe somewhere on billboard.com?

I've been alive forever... ; >

usenet annoys me--it always always has.

Favorite memory of 1976: piggybacking on my dad's shoulders when he went in to vote to Gerald Ford. Me, being a precocious young 3 1/2 y.o. democrat, flipped the toggle for Carter. Dad was pissed.
posted by moonbird 10 March | 23:53
You think it's easy for me to keep coming back to the thread to chat with you, spin the set, AND keep the party going in #mecha Amber?

*engraves an invitation for amber and seals it with love machine hug and kiss*
posted by WolfDaddy 10 March | 23:53
that's hilarious moonbird! :-D

moonbird : > (my mother used to take us into the booth too, each time, but we could never touch any of the cool levers, or reach the top yanking thing)

see, wolfie, now i'll come--this song on now can not possibly have been in the top 40--i don't know any of the words at all...
posted by amberglow 10 March | 23:58
Dude, that song was on the radio ALL THE TIME when I was a kid...
posted by WolfDaddy 10 March | 23:59
i felt the rush like a rolling ball of thunder...

i never heard it at all--it's been the only song i didn't know the words for, which can't be if it was really top 40--that's all they played, over and over and over and over...

Yeah, piggybacking with dad was always bad luck for him. One day I decided to eat a whole bottle of Flinstones vitamins. Without thinking about horrible repurcussions, he let me piggyback when we were at the pharmacy right after I'd had a large dose of the Ipecac.

All.

It looks like wolfdaddy's lists for '75 and '76 are also here, and his Top 15's from '74 and earlier match these lists, and there are definately some differences between the two...

The first list may have been from Billboard's "Year End Issue", which actually comes out a week before Christmas and cuts off the end/beginning of the "year" before Thanksgiving. The second list may be copied from Joel Whitburn's Billboard Pop Annual, an "authorized revisionist history" which used the true calendar years and listed all the #1 hits first...

How did I come to that conclusion? Rod Stewart's "Tonight's the Night" was #1 for the last 6 weeks of 1976. One one list it was the #1 song of '77, on the other it was the #1 song of '76. And I spent way too much time researching this...
posted by wendell 11 March | 04:22
BTW, the Bay City Rollers' "Saturday Night" WAS #1 for one week at the beginning of '76, and there were 26 different singles that hit #1 that year, so it probably was just under the Top 20 listed by that one site.

As for the site with the Top 100, the methodology of Billboard's "Year End Issue" was weighted in favor of Total Number Of Weeks a single was on the charts. So if a song zoomed to #1, then fell off the charts just as quickly, it ended up lower ranked than a song that hung around the middle of the chart for several months... so about half of the year's #1 hits ended the year below #40 on that list.

I must stop now before I turn into Casey Kasem.
posted by wendell 11 March | 04:41
Well, I appreciate the research. Who knew it would be so difficult to actually determine just how popular a song from 30 years ago actually was?

All I know is that I heard most of the songs I've been playing on Radio Mecha on my mom's car's radio ... endlessly.

Thanks again wendell!
