Photo Friday: Post your school or kiddy photos here!
sciurus, you're freaking adorable! "Straight pimpin" is melting my heart.

Ack. What at time not to have a scanner. Sorry for the quality, but this is the best I could do:

Here are two pics of a young Slack:

4 1/2 years old in a photo booth at the Museum of Science and Industry.

And my favorite family photo, a pic from around the same time with my three older brothers. I'm the one holding the bat.

Hah, Slack, I love your expression in the top of the photo booth one. "Sure... I'm gonna look where you point!"

Awwwww.. you guys are keeeeling me!

TrishaLynn, just add "metachat" and maybe "mecha" to your tags. At one point I started a metachat group, but people had already done it just with tags, so I didn't bother to push for everyone to re-do their things to the group.

This is going to be a good day.
posted by rainbaby 31 March | 07:53
Okay, here are a couple of photos from my high school yearbook: 1, 2.

I look doofier in my junior/sophmore photos, but the images in my yearbooks are about the size of my thumbnail, literally, so I'm not scanning them. If I gather the energy to find The Box and dig out those photos in larger format, or other kid pix of me, I'll post 'em later.

posted by taz 31 March | 07:58
oops. I should have said these are from senior year.
posted by taz 31 March | 07:59
This is me circa 1978, when I was about two, with my cousins (my cousin Jeffrey is in that seat because he is severely brain damaged and doesn't have much muscle control - that's a fucked-up story for another day). Here I am around 1981, when I was about 5, with my dad in Niagara Falls. This was the one and only time I ever went skiing, and man I stunk at it. We were about 16 in that picture, so it was probably 1992. Although we have grown up to be very, very different from one another, I am still close with those girls. For the sake of comparison, here we are in December 2005.

mike9322 - that first picture looks like the kind of photo that comes with a new frame.

Fuzzbean - I had actually completely forgotten that Pippi Longstocking ever existed. Now I have to start clearing the memory banks all over again!

shane - My photos from around 68 also feature lots of plaid. But my parents opted for green plaid overalls that seemed to be the go-to attire for pictures of me.

This is a blast. I can't wait until I get back from work to see everything else added during the day.

Oh, tommasz! Wow. So sad, yet so good have the photo. There's a little something about almost every personal/family photo that feels a bit like that.. bittersweet and teary. Yet usually it isn't so absolutely specific.

My husband's mother died young in a car accident, so every photo of her from around that period is indescribably sad, yet utterly priceless.

Here are a couple of me in my early twenties, maybe 21 or so. Hippy hair and and a lame attempt at a beard.

One more...this is me the summer I got married. Well, actually, it was labour day weekend (early september). I am posing with a Canadian classic drink, my Crown Royal and ginger ale.

'pode, try photobucket; I've used it for at least a year, and it's never let me down. (On preview: w/ kitty photo - oh! So sweet!)

re: the "hot" comments... I was like the stereotypical TV movie girl who wore glasses and read books, then she takes off her glasses and suddenly she's hotsy-totsy... Which is weird by today's aesthetic (thank goodness), but truly, I was more like a wallflower until I turned 17... and pretty much the only difference was that I got contacts. At any rate, I went from booknerd to miss popular, and the only difference I can tell is losing the glasses. (Anticipating: No, the boobs were already in place at that point!)

sciurus, that's a retouched scan of a very faded and discolored print. I had the print for years and it eventually faded but not evenly. I scanned it and tried to restore it myself but it was beyond my capabilities. We had a studio do the work and, while it's nice, it's not the same as the original.

My guess is that the original was a 35mm, either High-Speed Ektachrome or possibly Kodacolor. I had received a Nikkormat FTN for graduation and I'm fairly sure it was taken, by a relative, with that camera.

taz, pass some over here baby! I got's the day off! :-D

It's interesting to me, your experiences with gay people, and gives me hope for the future. In posting my own pictures today, I've gone through a LOT of old pictures, and have reminisced about many of the friends I have and have had and I find that they are more valuable by far than all but one of the romantic relationships I've had in my life. Why? Longevity. Hmmm, maybe by romantic I mean "passionate". Passion is a fire that burns brightly but in many instances, all too briefly, whereas for me friendship develops into a true love that really withstands the test of time. I have a fairly large circle of intimate friendships and most of them are well into their second decade, some of them into the third.

But in my life, friendship doesn't necessarily exclude sex as a means of expression, and I feel extraordinarly lucky for that, 'cause, y'know, sex is great and awesome and all. I also find it odd and remarkable that I've had sex with most of my close male friends, yet most of them, if truly pressed to label themselves, would say they are straight. However, the experience bonded us in ways that guys almost never experience, or at least almost never admit to experiencing.

Conversely, my deepest friendships with women--despite many temptations on both sides--have always been sex-free and for both of us it's almost a point of honor. That men and women can have deep, abiding, long-lasting and loving relationships without the pressure society puts on them to pair "for life", reproduce, all that jazz.

I blather, and probably should have made a new post for these thoughts, but I just wanted y'all to know what kinds of thoughts this Photo Friday has brought to me. Thanks, to all you bunnies and to mike9322cabanamuskleboy for the suggestion! I wub you all.

There are thousands of pictures of me as a kid (apparently I was really cute), but I'm too lazy/busy to scan/photograph/upload them all, so make due with the one that's already online:

≡ Click to see image ≡

I've always looked essentially the same, just with different-sized hair.

Now, my comments (going backwards):

Wow, Frisbee Girl is like exactly who I thought my idea girl would be when I was little. I always figured I'd find another brown girl and make little multiracial babies. (don't read too much into that, Fris. I'm not hitting on you or anything!) I just mean the picture I saw in my head when I was in grade school and would close my eyes and try to piece a picture together. Complete with (what looks like) impossible to manage hair, JUST LIKE MINE.

Fuzzbean makes me feel a bit light-headed. What a babe! (do you have a lovely, self-conscious smile?)

While I have not seen a more recent picture of essexjan, she looks almost just like what I pictured she would. She looks like the friend of the really attractive girl who I would always hit on because she was always sweeter and not as stuck up than the so-called "hot" friend.

Something tells me krix and I would have gotten up to mischief together. Hijinks!

Rebirtha is the girl I would have nursed a secret crush for throughout high school, only to finally ask her to the prom a week after she'd already gotten a date.

Richat was once a roadie for BTO.

Gaspode would have been the foreign girl who I was totally fascinated with (how many times have I done that? I need more fingers). Your second pic has me all retro-swoony.

Rainbaby channels Garbo... who knew? Seriously; you look straight out of a noir film. The "good girl".

Damn, amro has always been hot. And here I was hoping for a bad-glasses total nerd pic; I totally lose the bet I made in #bunnies last night. It's a shame when smart girls are always hot, because then you miss that "before she knows she's hot" period when you can totally sweep her off her feet.

As for taz... taz. Taz, taz, taz, taz, taz. Oh, taz, tazzie-poo, what to do with you? I seriously never thought there would be a mecha lady who challenged my mgl crush, but you have exceeded all expectations. It's a good thing I will never have to practically choose between the two of you, because I think it would be easier for me to jump a rhino and beat the shit out of it than to say no to either of you.

Goddamn, metachat is BEEEYOUTEEFUL.

Now I want to see pics of you all in 20 years so we can all laugh at how high our pants are while we fondly remember our teeth.

Next next week, in addition to all my past suggestions:
+Emulate a MetaChatter. Make yourself up/dress yourself up/pose in what is quintessentially in a way that flatters or lightheartedly pokes fun at another member. For example, I might put on a rock t-shirt, a flannel, grab a beer bottle, and presto! I'm jonmc. (I could blur the photo for extra realism).
+Something secret. Still have all your Babysitter's club books? Have a large Barry Manilow collection you're not entirely proud of?

That's where you're wrong... Notice I didn't post any photos of myself between the ages of 11 and 14? Those were the little shrimp with gigantic owl glasses years. All those pictures are at my parents' house. Fortunately.

But thank you for the compliment!

Awww, Eideteker, that's such a nice thing to say. When I was 16, 17 I had this friend, Petula, who I found out years later only went around with me because it made her look even better. I was never hit on, I was shy and used to drink (yeah, I drank as a teenager, I was drinking from 14) to hide the fear. So I used to get picked up a lot, but never asked on a date.

Gigawhat? Isn't that the real Santa.

I should've realised drinking was A Bad Idea for me at 14 when I found myself drinking hard cider with the winos in the Riverside Gardens, still in my school uniform. Took me 25 years to get sober.

I'm sometimes envious of the bar tales I hear you guys tell. But I know that if you ever went out drinking with me for just one night, you would never want to speak to me ever again. Guaranteed. So I stick to water and a good time is had by all.

Amro: You TEASE my HEART. (pls express those pics as soon as is convenient tks so I can let my amro crush run its full course)

EJ: That's exactly what I'm talking about. I would have totally pulled you aside and talked for hours. Then people would have made jokes and I would have gotten shy and not actually asked you out. But I would have said something nasty to those who were making fun of us (that K-I-S-S-I-N-G thing gets old really fast) first. I was shy, but outspoken. And whoooooa angry when I wanted to be. (one trip in sixth grade we went away to a nature camp. the teasing got really bad and then they stole my pants while I was showering. that night, the dam burst and from 10-11 till about 1:30 in the am, I was busting on one of them with every single yo mama dis in the book and then some, till the Chaperone yelled at us to can it. True to form, his friends were all laughing at him getting snapped on by the smart kid. I was then no longer an outcast--or at least respected--until next year when my small grade school went to middle school with kids from a different town and it started over. Never as bad as it was initially, though; people mainly gave me space which was fine).

THAT WAS A LONG DIGRESSION I AM SOREY. I have my own fucking livejournal, and I will run back to it now.

Richat reminds of Dewey (from Malcolm in the middle), especially in the ice cream photo. (I love Dewey.)

Dewey's Real-Life parents run a mexican restaurant in Milford, MA (or therabouts) that has a shrine to their son, with photos of him with all kinds of hollywood celebs. He looks like his dad, and I'm told his brothers help out in the restaurant sometimes, making for a Dewey-riffic night on the town.

Mudpuppie, that Grumpy Mudbaby picture is absolutely adorable.

Eideteker, a memory: it's from the exact time that the 16-year-old pic was taken, which was in Bristol, Sept '75. I'd signed up for a secretarial course, and we were taken away to Bristol on this get-to-know-each-other weekend. I was fearful, had weird clothes, didn't fit in. There was a disco (well, it was the 70s) and the girlies were all out there on the dancefloor giving it large. I stood in the corner, terrified. This really, really gorgeous lad talked to me all night. I was absolutely astonished. For once I wasn't drunk, there was no drinking allowed and I didn't know anywhere in Bristol to buy any. So I suppose I wasn't acting the drunken slut, which usually got me plenty of attention, but the wrong kind. The other girls had had their eye on this guy, and were as dumbfounded as I was that he'd picked me.

Thanks, Eid, I'd not thought about that. I never even thought about it whenever I looked at the picture, but you brought back probably the only good moment of my teenage years.

Sorry for the derail. Eid touched a nerve.

Welcome To The Dollhouse.

Actually, from my freshman to senior year in high school, I made it my business to dance with the girls that no one else would, and you know what? I never once regretted it. I prefer one long meaningful conversation a night to ten or twenty small-talks. That's one reason I loved foreign girls; they has so many questions that we never fell into small talk (as small talk which is a pit which I avoid as I know no escape from it).

I'm glad I could be of service, eee-jay! Dare we ask for more recent pics of a cleaned-up you?

Krix, no... barring a major miracle I will not be able to make it to Vegas. My entire life is on a day-by-day basis right now.

I have HEARTS FOR EYES now, Amro. I hope you're happy.

Band geeks are still geeks, y'know. Plus, it was a way out of PE, at least at my HS. All the tromping around counted as PE credit. All the drinking and fucking we did probably counted towards something too. Probably the "we're way cooler than the jocks who think they're cool" quotient.
