Aarrgh. Brainfart! Ugh. It's 3am and I'm zonked on something simple: Even after reading definitions in the dictionary, I can't get my head around this: the hollow of one's palm... concave or convex? Or am I confused because it would depend if the hand is palm up or palm down?[More:]

Ack, this is embarassing. Like when you stare at the word Why and think it's spelled wrong or looks weird.
concave either way, since the curve is inward

The hollow of anything (your palm, a satellite dish, etc.) is concave, regardless of what direction its facing. Handy mnemonic device: a cave goes inward.

So, gac: a cupped palm is concave. Other side of the same hand is convex?

Yes.

Sure, but please don't use it like this: "She bent down and kissed the convex curve of his hand"-- reads like physics porn.

Ick.

I'd sit in the corner wearing the funny hat but I must sleep.

Thanks, gac, scody, and seanyboy!

on preview: oh, sure, make me feel all self-conscious! :P

Now, of course, if "she bent down to trace the love line on the concave curve of his palm," then that would be psychics porn.

scody, that's perzackly the way i remember it. have i mentioned yer hawt?

I think it's both. Let's say the palm is facing the floor. Te space below the palm is concave. The space above the palm is convex.

In re-reading the question, you'd specifically asked "the hollow" so then yeah, it's concave.

Ok I'll shut up now.

Caves are hollow.

Stop me if you've heard this one...

There once was a man from Racine
Who invented a fucking machine
Both concave and convex
It would fit either sex
With attachments for those in between

Awake and alert, it seems obvious. Last night the synapses wouldn't jump. Thanks, all!

It doesn't depend on orientation.
