Photo Friday: "Y'at!? Where ya at?" Show us pics of where you live, work, eat, play, sleep, do unmentionable things on rollerskates and pogo sticks--whatever you fancy, or whatever tells us something about you, where you exist. More Inside.
Anything that strikes you about where y'at.

Cubicle decorations? Computer mascots? Posters or art in the house or apt? The coffeeshop you read the paper at every day? A beautiful (or ugly or strange) building you pass on the way to work?

The people who populate your life? Or should that be another thread?

Show us your world.

Notes:

A. This should in no way conflict with Fur Friday.

Another thing: You folks rock. Thanks.

C. See? See what?

My desk, which is what I spend 9 hours a day staring at. I was actually viewing MeCha when I took this. On the wall behind my screen is a rasturbation of a photo I took. It makes sense if you're just outside my cube, otherwise it looks like dots. I put it up to cover some messy tears in the wall.

See my desk pics, from the earlier thread. That's where I'm at now. : )

Here is a fairly crappy photo (I don't know what's going on with the reflection off the glass) of the view out my office window. Towards the left are two lighthouses at the entrance to the port (currently closed for the season), to the right is Browns Stadium, and out of frame to the far right I can see City Hall (where I used to work), The Rock Hall, and the Great Lakes Science Center. The building directly across the street (you can see the roof on the lower right) contains a jail.

Yes, I bring binoculars to work.

X marks my approximate location. Unfortunately the windows are tinted, so no matter how good the weather is, it always looks dull looking out. The building was blown up by the IRA ten years ago.

It's astonishing they were able to save it. They kept the same lifts & air conditioning systems when it was refurbished, both of which are usually out of action at least twice a week. False economies never pay.

Here's a pic of my bed. The blue pillow is not mine- belonged to my ex. But the cute little puppy is mine! As are the postcards on the wall.

Well. I had a whole big plan yesterday to do a "day in the life of" montage of photos, but then I got a horrible migraine and was taken out of commission for most of the day. So I'll have to improvise.

I live less than one mile from and drive by the campus of Pat Robertson's CBN and Regent University daily. Note the satellite dishes in the first link - Pat's insane ramblings are passing through my air!

This is where I work. Not the line of ships along the left of this photo. At the very top are the carriers - there are four based out of Norfolk and I can see them from my office window. You can tell, based on how many carriers are in port, what traffic is going to be like. Right now there are no carriers in port, and traffic is so great - 25 minutes to get home. Add 10 minutes to my commute for each one that's here.

Here's my desk from the earlier thread.

I just poked through my flickr stream and couldn't find any decent pics of home. Maybe I'll take a few tonight. I'm sure you will all bookmark this thread in anticipation.
posted by mike9322 03 March | 10:10
Okay, I'm going to cheat a bit and use a photo I already have... if I manage to take something new, I'll post it later.

This is looking from my office toward our living room; I took the shot because the sun shining through the little holes on my window's roll-down shutter was making cool patterns on the door and the wall.

Heh, sciurus, that's great. I love that last photo, essexjan. These are all really cool. I remember that photo, taz--it's a great one.

I took some pictures for this, but forgot to download them from my camera. Here's a ridiculous one of me standing in front of part of my bookshelf. That's pretty much where I live.

(A note on my outfit: the clogs are awesome for cooking, the pants are some weird liner from army surplus that feel like wearing a cloud, are really warm, and leave my shins to freeze, the hat was a red and white striped gift.)

MGL! In the town where I used to live, there was a building owned by the sweetest old lady (who passed away just over a year ago) who had all these mannequins in the windows for decades. She'd periodically change the displays to something else. I wish I had pictures.

I've been living in Obninsk, Russia since January 7.
My apartment is in the second column of the largest building in this photo. Behind the pole. Third flat down.

I work for a school here teaching English. I don't mind teaching but I don't want to do it forever. A few of my students:

The schools that I've been in are interesting because they have a fair amount of oldish stuff. Which I'm very interested in. Here's a robot I discovered today:

This town is surrounded by gorgeous forest. It all looks like this. It's enchanting and frightening to walk in.

forest

One interesting thing is that there are lots of plants here. Everywhere. Sometimes they make nice photos.

Most of the buildings here were built in Soviet times. This is a fairly average apartment building. They go from worse than this to as good as any housing in the US.

This is the view from my window.

Finally, I have something special to share. I have made a binaural recording of me walking to the supermarket, buying food, and walking home again. There's a lot of boring in it- walking, breathing, coat noises, and so on. It was just to test my microphones.

Two things about this recording. If you listen to it, you have to listen to it on headphones, period, no matter what. It will sound immersive. On speakers it just sounds funny and you miss every important detail.

The file is a 47mb mp3. So please don't download it if you don't intend to listen to it. It's best listened to once-through, so you get the sequence.. skipping around can be a bit disorienting.

The sound of my life.

My entire photostream is more or less a growing photo-documentary of the world in which I live and my weirdo perspective on it.

One of my recent, larger scale projects has been scanning, color correcting, uploading and annotating hundreds of family photos. I'm just now getting through the first batch of about 60. It's been a moving experience to actively focus on some of these moments and one that makes me feel incredibly fortunate for having had the opportunity to do so.
