Ask MeCha: who might this band have been? On a flight from Copenhagen to Amsterdam on November 3rd, the last people to board were a group of bohemian-looking fellows, who nevertheless took business-class seats. A steak sauce worthy of Syrah While I could have prepared a classic steak au poivre, I opted for a recipe inspired by one created by French chef Roger Verge in his prime. Thanksgiving Day Music All day on Thursday, but particularly in the morning, WNCW, my local public station, will be playing songs about food with a heavy emphasis on Americana - bluegrass & old country & blues & god knows what else. It's very fun and it culminates with Alice's Restaurant at noon. This has been a public service announcement.

Red cheecks after beer - ok, after being pregnant and nursing somethings happened to my alcohol tolerance. Yesterday I had three beers in a row (a rare event) and my cheeks went so red that Rudolf would envy me. What the hell? Does this pass or am I stuck being a wuss forever now?
AskMecha - you get what you pay for, right? I want to fool around with a wee blog that is disconnected from me and I don't know how long I can be bothered so I don't wanna fork out loads of cash and sign up for a year so was wondering if anyone knows a free hosting place for msql/php out there? Maybe one that can be upgraded if I decide to keep it up? Obviously, if I put it on my own server everyone will know it's me and that will kinda be a wet cloth.... yaknow?

Thanksgiving Day Parade Is anyone going to be at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in NYC?
My fiancee and I, along with my father, two sisters, and two of my aunts will be escorting the Pillsbury "Holiday Lovin' Oven" float in the parade. We will be dressed as baked goods, apparently. I was hoping that if someone was going to be there and was going to be taking pictures, if they wouldn't mind posting them somewhere so I could see them? Or maybe even just capturing footage from the TV footage would be cool too.
I am hoping this is MetaTalk appropriate. Didn't want to waste space in AskMe. Anyway, if anyone can help out, I'd appreciate it.

I have discovered the resonant frequency of my shower stall. I know I haven't posted for months, and for that I am very sorry. But I just had to let the world know...It's somewhere around the A below middle C, give or take a microtone. Every other note I hum is kind of muffled and non-committal...but that A just gets amplified and purified and fills the bathroom like a church bell. This is the most exciting thing that's happened to me all day. ok bye <3

Thanks to the illustrious arse_hat, here's Southside Johnny, Little Steven and Bruce Springsteen singing
"It's Been A Long Time" (YSI). Dave Marsh once wrote of Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell's "Your Precious Love" 'this is what love sounds like." Well, this song is what friendship sounds like. These three were together in New Jersey when nobody was anybody and you can hear it in the way their voices mingle and the relaxed cameraderie. It's hard not to be moved by it.
An appeal to patriotism is a contradiction in terms. Especially when made by politicians. You can no more appeal to patriotism than you can appeal to love. You may feel it, but you can't demand it.
David Hare's
The Vertical Hour.
"When Republicans tried to pass the Federal Marriage Amendment last summer, their aim was to protect the institution of marriage, which is the basic building block of our society, from being destroyed by gay marriage. But if Republicans really want to save the institution of holy matrimony, they should start by
saving Britney's marriage."

America's Most Perfect Ticky-Tacky Suburb ...unlike East Coast Levittowns, the homes in Westlake remain curiously unmarred by later additions and remodels, and thanks to lots of loving maintenance and lawn care, the area's architecture now exudes midcentury-modern cool. Driving the streets feels like cruising through a time capsule of late 1950s America, with all the innocence and optimism that era embodied. And in 2006, that seems strangely reassuring.

Disorganized, not-too-bright, control-freak procrastinator. I think one of my classmates has just become the absolute worst set of traits for a project partner. Convince me otherwise? "Serial killer Jesus freak" is all I can come up with.
Clueless woman needs a lil' Windows hope. I have a picture that is pasted into a Microsoft Word file. I want to make this picture my wallpaper, but since it's pasted into a Word document, and is not a standard photo file, I don't know how. It seems like this should be easy, but what do I do?
Help me! I'm bored stupid! My students have all blown me off for the afternoon and I don't agree with the motion I'm supposed to be defending at my other job. Therefore, I need something interesting to look forward to.

President Bush is Visiting my Campus Right Now. When his motorcade passed by my office I stuck my speakers in the open window and played the Darth Vader theme from Star Wars. Such was my futile protest.

Hey LA, hey hey LA + music I'm movin' to LA come the spring. Why? My girlfriend decided to take a job there (after much consternation) at UCLA as a health science librarian. She's gonna move there at the end of November, probably over Thanksgiving, or the beginning of December.
She's there now, trying to find a place to live that's both close-ish to UCLA and affordable.
She's contacted about 100 different Craigslisters, and driven around looking for signs.
She's gotten a grand total of four calls back.
She's kinda freaking out.

Ask Mecha: How do I tactfully postpone a job offer? Could all y'all hook me up with some nice paint-by-numbers things to tell a prospective employer to postpone making a decision on the job offer I just got while I collect more information about the frickin' dream job that has been calling my references? It's an either/or kind of thing, so I can't really accept now and then back out.

What's going on with Iron Man (Marvel Geeks Unite)? so the last modern Iron Man I read was Iron Man Volume 4 #1 so I have no idea what's going on with Civil War except that Tony Stark is now a giant prick. Can anyone give me a rundown on what's currently going on with shellhead?
Letters to TPS Write me a letter in thread, and I will write you back! KTHNXBYE!
Der Blaue Engel Well, I took Zach_Replica's
suggestion and dressed as Marlene Dietrich for my workplace Halloween celebration. Every time my photo was taken my internal mantra was "Cold allure. Cold allure." I think an ex of mine said it best when he called my look "disturbing and f*cked in the best possible way". In short, I look like a trannie from Berlin, circa 1926, and that's without your having heard my German accent or having seen my impromptu tap dance and song routines.

Did anyone see this MeTa thread about an old post? It's FPP from 2002, about an article in a Miami paper about a complicated set of myths created by homeless children, dealing with good and evil and hope and love and how to stay strong in a cruel and heartless world.

I want to sponsor a MeFi election contest. Help me choose the rules. MeFi's
past contests have been for the presidential elections, where the electoral vote provided a pretty clean scoring system. It's a bit harder to design one for the midterms. It seems that a good contest will weight the house and senate fairly equally. It's probably pointless to get people to predict the outcome of individual house races, but not for the senate. More inside...
