Joanna Newsom's "Ys" album has been getting some exceptionally good reviews. She's definitely got one of those "you'll either love it or hate it" voices, but it does grow on you. Ys is only five tracks long, so here's one track from it: Monkey & Bear.
I'm in the "love it" camp, as long as the songs are part of a more diverse playlist.

She was a high school friend of my niece, and we heard her CD before it was out there, you know, "hey, here's some quirky music my friend made."

There were some dismissive reactions to the general strangeness, but it was clearly compelling and musical. It's nice to see her get all the recognition that she has.

Her voice is much more manageable on this album. I really ummed and ahhed about which track to upload. I'm still not sure if Monkey & Bear is the most accessible one, but it's a good indication, I guess.

She's touring the UK in January next year with a 32 piece orchestra, which could be cool.

There's some cool people on this album: Van Dyke Parks did the strings, Steve Albini recorded it and, IIRC Jim O'Rourke mixed it.

Defo. Prior to Ys I couldn't really hack the squeaking.

She was in Cleveland the other day. Packed house. I didn't go though.

jack_mo: steer well clear of CocoRosie then - you'll find them almost unlistenable!

Sorry - def in the NO camp. This woman;s voice squicks me out to the nth. But again, so did Neutral Milk Hotel for the same reason, but now I'm a fan. So it may be just a matter of time and acclimation.

I gotta say, I like "Emily" the best. The other tracks aren't as appealing for me, but I really do love the music. Good to see the album making the rounds.

My ears really started to appreciate Cosmia this afternoon - it's a top track.

If we're talking about artists who have voices that are difficult to get into, my number one nomination is Neil Young. Sweet Jeebus, I cannot stand his voice.

I like Joanna, even if the first time I heard her I said something like, "She sounds like a little retarded girl." I've been liking this album a lot as well, mainly because Van Dyke Parks helped with the strings. Melissa and I saw her play with just the harp and it was fantastic, even in a loud bar.

sleepy_pete: my sister has seen her live with just a harp and raves about the gig. The first time I heard her voice, I had a similar reaction. Still, Bjork is really popular so there's no reason that Joanna can't make it big. Ys seems to be doing pretty well so far, so hopefully it's onto bigger things.
