I've never really watched Star Trek, and I don't like Boston Legal. But whenever I'm channel-surfing and I catch William Shatner as Denny Crane, he makes me laugh. Why?
Besides of course the very valid reason that I may very well be a moron.

Beacuse he's Shatner. You are powerless against him.

Shatner to me is the perfect entertainer because he never seems to mind making an ass of himself. This allows him to be tremendously over the top and irresistible.

Ever hear the clip of him butchering the word "sabotage" and then insulting the person that corrects him? It's hilarious.

I can't wait until that new game show he's hosting starts - this Friday, I think. It's just about the cheesiest thing I've ever seen. Show Me The Money, I think it's called.

JanetLand wins. I think that's pretty much the Shatner allure.

Yeah. It's because he's making fun of himself, and we like to see that done well.

A couple of weeks ago I watched the episode of Star Trek in which Kirk gets split into two people--an evil Kirk who wears heavy eyeliner and drinks booze straight from the bottle, and a good Kirk who loses his ability to make command decisions. There is some mumbo-jumbo in there about Kirk needing his rage to make him who he is or something, but point is, the episode is basically Shatner versus Shatner, and it is a thing of beauty from beginning to end.

That episode comes early in season one, too, so clearly the producers realized the awesomeness of Shatner pretty much right off the bat.

I am married to Denny Crane, minus the drinking, womanizing and cigars.

He hasn't shot anyone with a paint gun.

Yet.

So he's just a respected nutcase without vices? Interesting. I just hope he doesn't develop Alzheimer's.

You also have to give some credit to David E. Kelley for the character. Kelley loves his old wacky lawyers.

And remember, Leslie Neilsen was in the original "Airplane"... Shatner was in the sequel. Coincidence? I think not.
