Attn CMS aficionados: drupal? Any experience / thoughts? I'm thinking of using it for a geographically dispersed group of facilities management folks who specialize in veterinary facilities. IFMA doesn't appeal to them, they want their own, & I want them to be able to update when they want & have a forum.
I recently switched over to drupal for my community weblog. If you want integrated forums/events calendar and weblog, then it will work for you. If you just want something with multiple authors, go with Wordpress.

Drupal is a headache in terms of redesigning, since it uses a theme file and 3 different CSS files [I have no idea who thought of this]. There are a bunch of different modules, but the installation can be difficult if you aren't familiar with mySQL and it isn't as user-friendly as Wordpress.

Thanks sciurus. Th emultiple CSS file sounds like a nightmare. I was just looking over the installation info and thinking, uh, maybe not! I've been debating also about using Wordpress but having one of the pages be the default home page instead of the forum itself. I like how phpBB segments different areas for topics, but I don't like having to update it everytime a new version comes out. *sigh*

You're looking specifically for forum software? I ran phpBB on the old forums, but there wasn't a way to allow a user to be logged in to both the CMS AND the bulletin board, which is why I switched to Drupal.

phpBB has tons of trouble with spam. I've heard good things about Simple Machines though.

Bluffton Today also runs drupal, and they do a pretty good job.

Yeah I've had a lot of trouble with spam on my phpBBs. What I really want is a CMS (?) that has a forum embedded in it so I can just use one thing for the whole site, and spread the update load amongst the users.

Simple Machines looks really good forum wise - I hadn't heard of them. Thanks for the tip! I may just go ahead and set that up until I can' figure out what the heck to do with the rest of the site.

The only CMS with an embedded forum that I know about is Drupal, so I guess that might be your only choice in that regard.

I dabble in drupal, here and here, and I like it but am pretty confused by it as well (so new to me). I've also set up wordpress for countless pals and if you want just to have multiple authors, I'd go with the latter.

Creating a flat forum in drupal is a fairly simple css hack but still, it's a little weird.

Everyone I know who has used Mambo has switched to Wordpress a few weeks later.
