worst movies from directors you like? [More:]

re: The Departed vs other Scorsese flicks

To start things off, John Carpenter's Vampires.

I saw previews for that movie and was like "John Carpenter bringing us James Woods as a wise-cracking vampire slayer? Sweet!"

Don't get me wrong, he has had plenty of misses but this one almost had to be a hit. It had some of his trademarks and was quirky enough to work but somehow it just came out BORING. Watch Escape from New York, Big Trouble in Little China, The Thing, Halloween... you might not like them, but none of them are boring.

George Lucas and Steven Spielburg are too easy, so don't go there.

(although the next Jurassic Park sounds so fucking INSANE that it might be fantastic)
As a person who loved Slacker, Before Sunrise made me want to puke. Ethan Hawke?

Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut

Kevin Smith's Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back.

Tim Burton's Big Fish and Planet of The Apes.

Larry Cohen's It's Alive sequels.

Wes Craven's Scream 3 (esp. since the first two are so, so brilliant).

Robert Altman's Ready To Wear. It should have been mean, and it wasn't.

Dario Argento's The Card Player. (And Argento is possibly my favorite director ever.)

Seconding Eyes Wide Shut and Gangs of New York. And let's just say that I prefer the old Peter Jackson.

Big Yes to Big Fish. That movie actually turned me off of both Burton and Ewan McGregor.

recently: The Queen, Stephen Frears. Wha?
Black Hawk Down, Ridley Scott.
Ditto on Gangs of NY.
Saving Private Ryan, Spielberg (hated all except the first 10minutes) and I am a hugestest Spielberg fan.
Alexander, Oliver Stone. Yuck. Eeeek! Do I really like Stone? Umm, yeah, ok.

oops, I just realized that you said to not go to Spielberg. OK, FWIW, I really like Spielberg. I find that he does perfectly what he does, although he is not particularly inventive himself.

Coen Brothers: I liked 'em all

yes, ico, same here. If Cohen brothers put something out I'd go see it immediately. It has always been a treat for me.

The thing with the directors I love (most -if not all- mainstream really) is that I can rarely say that one of their movies is 100% bad. There are always things I like about them. In the Frears movie Mirren was fantastic. In Gangs of NY the whole setting was authentic and captivating. Even Solaris, ummm, had some nice furniture...

Kubrick - Barry Lyndon
I, I, I.

I mean. That. I mean. You. I. Hey! I mean.

Aaaarrrrrgggg.

Kubkick. You've seen his films, right?

Sorry.

*Takes deep breath*

We're not "discussing" here, right? Because...

Oh, and not to be too much of an arsehole, but I forgot,

Barton Fink, Cohen Brothers
