No nirvana? No radiohead? No pixies?

(yeah yeah I'm sure we could all pick a bajillion artists that should have been on there, and didn't want to be.)

That doesn't prove we're old. It just proves that the nostalgia market runs more quickly than it used to. (Right? RIGHT?)

Hey, mr. mc--did you catch my (and carmina's) request for Fight the Power in a previous thread? Can you hook us up?

No Spice Girls? No TLC? No Backstreet Boys?

That's what my daughter would say if I showed this to her. She was 4-14 in the 90s and that's what she listened to.

So yes, I do want to feel reallly old - thanks!

pode: the two previous volumes in that series were all about the top 40 ephemera, so they were sticking with that rather than the more timeless artists, since it was about the era more than anything else. I'm just stunned that not only my childhood and adolescence, but now my young adulthood have become nostalgic days-gone-by.

*toddles off to watch Matlock, tells kids to get off his lawn, realizes he dosen't have a lawn, carries on regardless*

jrossi: I don't have PE's "Fight The Power." I do however have the Isley Brothers original.

I am glad to see 'What I Got' in there. That song was extremely popular at the dive bar I used to patronize back in my bookstore clerk days.

Must ... get ....

What the fuck!? We get Moby but no 808 State or Orb? We get Helmet and fucking White Zombie but no Ministry or Pigface? House of Pain's Jump Around but no Cypress Hill's Insane in the Membrane!? WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS SHIT? Second rate copycats are cheaper to license for royalties, huh?

I fucking hate Rhino, I really do. Fucking poachers. They were cool and all when they were rereleasing that out of print rarity shit, but goddamn if they didn't get all full up on their own happy shit and go and declare themselves tastemakers or gatekeepers.

Fuck'em. I already have all that shit anyway. ;)

I actually kind of like them. They approach their comps like fans rather than just looking at old Billboard charts or label rosters and their packaging and documentation have always been great*. I once toyed with the idea of making a homebrewed themed boxed set and sending it to them in hopes of getting a job, but never got around to it.

*these** sets are great, for example.

**yes, I realize that Nuggets was Lenny Kaye (one of my cultural heroes)'s idea first, but Rhino did a great job recompiling, packaging and annotating it. I'd love to do a Titanium Nuggets of obscure underground metal from the mid 80's like Mama's Boys, Anvil and shit like that..I blogged about it four years ago. (audio links long dead, sorry)

Ugh. 25 is old?

I used to think so . . . .

What a disparate collection; think it needs some further distillation. That's why I choose "Connected" by Stereo MC's to represent the entire musical output of 90s. What track on this comp better evokes a nostalgic "whatever"? Listening to that song is about the same experience as not listening to it, so just imagine this is a link to the mp3 on YSI and enjoy. Could anyone like this song?

"I'm too Sexy" is a close second but remains too much of a novelty.

HEY!

I used to watch the Turtles through the window at this club called the Revelair in Redondo Beach on account of my being underage to get in.

Oh, they were the Crossfires, then. . .a surf band.

I think that I know from old, here!

You won't even believe how fast 25 turns into 30. Lightning fast. It's scary.
And then hopefully you wont start saying sad things like, "30 is the new 20."

Weren't they also Chief Kamanawanaliea and The Royal macadiama Nuts as well?

The first several songs remind me of my senior year of high school, and the rest of the first two thirds tells the story of my college life. Oh, the memories...

jrossi, and carmina: I've got Public Enemy's 'Fight the Power,' probably in multiple versions even. Hit me via the email in my profile and I'll send you a copy.

Rhino have a "best of The Afghan Whigs" coming out soon and managed to get the band back in the studio to knock out a couple of brand new tracks for it. For that, I am truly thankful as The Whigs rocked.

Frankly, I wouldn't want to see the Pixies on any compilation that had Hanson on it. ew.

30 IS the new 20, isn't it? That's great, because then I'm still in my early twenties.

Also, I felt really old the other day when a woman who was waiting on me and a friend didn't know what his Rubik's cube was.

Will do, box. Thanks!

Really old is working with a butcher who was in diapers when you started working for your company. Sigh.

Zack, I'm a huge Pixies fan, but 'Mmmbop' is an almost perfect pop song, and some of the more rock oriented stuff on their later records is really not half-bad. Bubblegum can be a refreshing treat. See this book for further elucidation.
