An "Angel from Montgomery" refers to a pardon from the governor of Alabama in Montgomery.

Apparently among death row inmates in Alabama a pardon was called an "Angel from Montgomery". Prine has the woman ask for an Angel from Montgomery because she is destined to die in a prison of her own making unless something dramatic happens like finding the nerve to leave her loveless marriage.
