PSA: Compact means a small car! [More:]PLEASE STOP parking in the compact car spots if you are not driving a compact car.

Trucks, vans, minivans, SUVs, UAVs (urban assault vehicles), and luxury sized cars should not be parking in spaces clearly marked for compact cars, please and thank you.

Here's a hint: If the people you parked next to can not open their car doors because your car is too close on both sides then please consider that your car is probably too fucking big for that spot. Geez.
At least they're not parking on your lawn. I mean, am I right?

You should be mad at the parking lot planners- "compact" spaces shouldn't exist at all, imo. They make everyone's life miserable.
posted by small_ruminant 08 November | 16:16
I agree with small_ruminant. Small parking spaces tick me off, because they mean that inconsiderate people are THAT much more likely to ding my car.

I am usually a small footprint on the earth kinda guy, but I like the way Costco paints their parking lots. LOTS of room in parking spaces.

I do think that if there ARE compact labelled spaces though, only a douchebag would park in one with anything other than a small, small car.

PSA = Prostate-Specific Antigen, no?

SUVs, UAVs
I prefer the term "FUV"

Yes, I too agree with s_r, but the lines are already there and that asshat has parked me in more than 3 times and I am irritated because there are NUMEROUS EMPTY spots six (6) steps away from where he parked that are very large spaces... He's just a lazy ass, and I am not the only one in the office that has left very nice notes on his car asking him to stop parking in spots he clearly does not fit in.

Thank you for allowing me to vent. I appreciate it.
As funny a sight as I am sure it was - I was most pissed the time I had to crawl in through the freaking trunk of my car- ok, actually it is a coupe with rear seats that fold down... but same difference and at least I was able to get in to my car.
posted by getoffmylawn 08 November | 16:55
That sucks. Maybe it's time to leave a not-so-nice note. And let the air out of his tires.

Presumably, they're happy the trade the increased risk of scratches and dents with the convenience of parking in a compact space.
posted by flopsy 08 November | 17:11
man am i glad i don't ever have to deal with this...

goml i hate to say this but first of all 'compact' spaces don't solve anything they just crank up everyone's sense of entitlement. i won't go into my pseudopsychological rant about the links between americans, the automobile and the sense of identity and entitlement that's all tangled up in car ownership but... yeah.

anyways

honestly this sounds like one of those kind of jerks who does it not because they're oblivious but simply because they think it's funny to piss people off. there was a certain arrogant SOB at a former job who would do this kind of thing just because they found the results entertaining.

so if there's larger, free spaces six (6) steps away, um... shouldn't the answer be obvious?

sorry i know this is a nonhelpful sort of answer from a selfsuperior cyclist but seriously... if you're concerned about damage why not park your own car in a lesser used area of the lot?

from a selfsuperior cyclist

One of the ones who likes to come in packs to ride the "country" roads around here and thinks they're being environmentally responsible because they take the time to bag their trash before leaving it on the side of the road? Who whips it out and takes a piss wherever they like because well, it's our fault for not having public restrooms on private property? Who likes to give motorists who don't pass them quick enough the finger (despite the fact that the roads are hilly and windy and not at all safe for passing?)

I know that's not you, LFR. Just wanted to make the point that not all assholes drive SUVs. Many ride bikes. In large, ignorant groups.
posted by jrossi4r 08 November | 17:28
LFR: I could care less about damage to my car. I am irritated because I should not have to crawl in to my car through the freaking trunk because that asshat can't park six spaces over where there are large spaces for big cars to park in. The big spots aren't any farther away from the door than the compact spaces either. I don't park there because I don't want to take up a space that is too large for me when there are other people driving bigger cars that need to/expect to park there.

In my self-entitled world, bicyclers are only worth 30 points. (OMG, LFR, I hope you know I am teasing you!)

Specklet gets the check mark for best answer.

And thank you jrossi4r. I concur - I know asshats that walk, drive, bike, take PT... I am not saying what this guy drives makes him an ass, I am saying knowingly parking people in/blocking them out of their cars is what makes him an ass.

i wasn't aware this was a competition...?

Nawh... I have just always wanted to let the air out of someone's tires! LFR, You know you are my Tonto, baby!

And let the air out of his tires.

I once suggested this jokingly to my sweet-as-pie best friend and she replied matter-of-factly, "No, it's better to cut off the valve and tape it to their windshield so they know it was done on purpose."

I still love her, but she scares me sometimes.
posted by jrossi4r 08 November | 17:44
Heh, now that I've won best answer (it was such an honor just to be nominated!) I'll say: screw not taking up a big spot out of the kindness of your heart! Park wherever you want. If the asshat is using a compact space anyway, take his big honkin' spot.

But if you want to take the air out of the tires, you go right ahead.

On preview: don't cut off their valve and tape it to their window, though. You don't want to be paying for no new tires. But if you let the air out of all four tires, you know they're going to know you did it on purpose.
posted by Specklet 08 November | 17:47
No, but I might like to mention in a note on the windshield that...

someone not as thoughtful as I am (heh) might start letting the air out of his tires if he keeps parking people out of their cars.

Goatse on the windshield!

oh and eatitlive, your comment was very funny too.

FYI, parking spaces are not sized arbitrarily. Most jurisdictions specify sizes for compact and regular stalls and have a maximum percentage which can be designated compact. The city of Portland has opted to eliminate this distinction in favor of making all stalls a medium sized 9'x18'. It is in the interest of the architect and the developer to pack as many stalls as possible on the site, in order to meet the minimum required for a given use. Often a national brand tenant will not look at sites without a minimum ratio of stalls to building area.

Surely, lfr, like free parking for low-emission vehicles and exemption from congestion charging, designated compact spaces are an incentive.
posted by flopsy 08 November | 18:44
flopsy, i don't drive. so I wont argue with your logic but its not like I have a dog in this hunt anyhows.

my point was that people who drive cars often tend to use them as extensions of their personality and identity. I certainly know a ton of boulder-ites who feel they should be entitled to 'special programs this-and-that' because they drive a hybrid. is this wrong? probably not. its when people get that 'i'm entitled to _____ because...' that I wonder when it became so important to win special treatment.

it's a demi-political rant, for which i apologise. anyway I do own a car but i hate driving it. I'm merely grinding an axe with the whole 'zomg must-drive-everyWHARE!' attitudes I see on a daily basis. please. feel free to ignore me.

and yes jrossi i hate those asshat cyclists as much as anyone does. even more fervently actually because they make life hell for commuters like myself who are just trying to get along with traffic and not get killed on a daily basis. I don't even do group rides anymore because no one will nut up and control them around here.
posted by lonefrontranger 08 November | 21:09
This is probably not the best place to mention that I just bought one of these. Well, not a new one, but more or less just as evil. I also ride a bike regularly, so does one cancel the other out?
