I'm completely obessessed with Ys. [More:]It's so beautiful and rich and completely hers -- such a true artistic accomplishment -- I don't have the words. But I am so grateful to her.

I'm linking to an interview with her but it makes me sadder than usual, the modern media music machine, the ecstatic reviews that people have learned to reflexively sneer at as pretentious hype. So I wouldn't dream of trying to sell this record. I just hope if you need it, you take it.

From "Sawdust and Dust":

From the top of the flight
of the white white stairs
through the rest of my life
do you wait for me there?
There's a bell in my ears --
there's the white white roar --
drop a bell down the stairs
hear it fall forevermore
hear it fall forevermore.

The song is here.
Holy crap, Melissa, that album has absolutely haunted me since you played it for me last week. That afternoon was as fey as her music. Perfect.

Do you know the freesias you gave me are still blooming, darling? So I haven't stopped thinking of you either, fey girl. (Like fly girl, only with more unicorns.)

Oh god, me too. My favorite song is Emily. And I hated JN before.

It's great to listen to while driving in a pouring rain.

Oh and Frisbee can I tell you how glad I am that I saw this, and how sorry I am that I missed it the first time?

Matildaben, I love Emily too. The pouring rain, in such helpful and large supply, does enhance the experience, as does sitting in the dark lit only with Christmas lights with headphones on trying not to wake anyone else in the sleeping world.

Awww, no worries Miss Melissa! I simply found his site and story incredibly interesting and thought I'd share.

I _hated_ her first album. Should I bother with this one?

WATUC - I wasn't keen on her first album, but Ys is much more listenable. I posted another track from Ys a few weeks back and other people said that they prefer this one as well. It takes a few spins, but it's definitely worth it.

Gah, TheDonF, sorry -- I somehow missed your original Ysgasm. Thanks for linking back to it.

Give it a try, Were. I had a general dislike for her first album, as well.

I think folks who listen to a lot of classical music would "get" this album, as it's kind of like a song cycle in structure.

It's on eMusic so I might give it a go.

No worries MM - 'tis a great album. Another three posts and we'll have uploaded the whole thing, LOL

For the first time in my life I feel a twinge of guilt downloading music because she went to High School in Nevada City CA with my niece. I think they had some kind of falling out over a boy, so screw her anyway.
