Once there was a band from Minneapolis, [More:]called Soul Asylum. They were like lots of bands laboring in bars and clubs around the country. They had a nice raw blurry sound and a nice songwriting touch, that got them played on Vin Scelsa's morning show back in the day. They had a huge hit with a song that nicely mirrored the isolation felt by a college flunkout working nights in a bakery. Then also did a nice Victoria Williams cover for a charity record, and contributed a track to the soundtrack of one of the greatest movies ever.

Then they fired their drummer and cut a couple of really shitty albums and ceased being relevant or entertaining in any way whatsoever. I blame Winona Ryder.
I agree, Run-JMC. I remember being in college when they first came out and trying to buy a Cult record at Ye Olde Hipster Record Store, and the clerk just laughing and handing me a Soul Asylum record like he was Yoda.

He was right, that Hipster Yoda.

Ah yes, Soul Asylum. I liked Grave Dancers and, even more so, Let Your Dim Light Shine - I've got their previous albums, but really haven't paid them much attention. Any idea what this year's The Silver Lining is like? The reviews have been pretty below average.

mi feets hurt from the zoo today, those damn penguins. But the kids are jamming! Somebody to shove is fantastic. I loved "clerks" indeedo. One of the first movies I saw in USofA and felt I totally "got it" since I doubt I would have related to it as much if I were still in Greece. Thanks again jon.

carmina, for a good part of my life, I lived in the world Clerks detailed, and god it was gratifying to see it onscreen, and that song is a perfect accompaniment.

and the first song linked contains the immortal line 'if you're cryin' in your beer, your gonna drown...'

For me, I lived in a small city in the south, mostly college kids who would make some cash from working and living like that. I was hanging out with them... I tell you, it was totally surreal (in a good sense) for a gal from Greece who knew no-one else there.

I am beating my head on the wall to remember. Clerks was sort of part 1 of a "trilogy" by Smith. Chasing Amy was another. What the hell was the third?

OMG!!!! hot shit. (IMDB duh!) Mallrats was the movie I was thinking about....

Did you all know that Kevin Smith was the same dude who a couple of years ago shot that despicable Jersey Girl? Eeeeek!

Soul Asylum did an OK cover of Sexual Healing for the No Alternative Complilation back in the early 90s. I will YSI it at 5 pm Pacific.

jonmc is then be expected to blast it from the stereo and dance suggestively around the living room for pips...
