On Saturday I asked my nephew what he dressed as for Halloween. [More:]
"A six-series," he said.
"A what?"
"I dressed as a BMW six-series."

He went on to tell me that a friend of his went dressed as a fireman, but that nobody else in the class dressed as a vehicle, so he suggested that he might be a big help if he was a "fire car, you know, instead of a fire truck."

I recommended a siren and lights to better race around town with, and suggested that his fire car would be much faster than any old fire truck, and that he'd be the first responder every time.

"Really? You can do that?"

"Why sure. You'd probably even get a medal and a fire department citation for being so fast all the time."

"Mommy! I can get a medal for being the fastest fire car," he shouted, dropping the phone and running around while my brother picked up the phone and asked if I had a nice time talking to my nephew.

Of course. I always do.
Hahaha, the dropped phone. Perfect.

Anyone here ever read any Leonardo Sciascia? I'm thinking of giving a book or two of his to my mother for Christmas (she digs mysteries), and NYRB Classics have yet to let me down, but I thought maybe someone might be able to recommend the best ones.

Man, I love stories about your nephew.

You have the coolest nephew ever, Hugh. (Except, of course, for any uncle of Joe Famous.)

Your nephew is the shizzzle! Reminds me of my three scabbed-kneed runts.

Ain't unclehood the bestest?

It's almost enough to get me to start pricin' tickets to Germany to see my niece and her four (yes, I'm a Great Aunt... the grey hairs, they are a multiplyin'). Then again, four little ones (one girl and three boys), all under the age of six, might be a bit overwhelmin' (I hear they have giant beers in Berlin).
