Steve Reich's music isn't my cup of tea, but I still respect the guy, and the interview was interesting.

I remember a chat with the man who directed the percussion ensemble at my undergraduate alma m., and he recounted the first program he put on at that (not very avant garde) institution: he chose to start with a really minimalist work by Reich (I don't know which), nothing but very small changes gradually propagating over about 10 to 12 minutes. He said by about 30 seconds, he was already getting that "is it over yet?" vibe from the audience - and there was no way out, just another 12 minutes of exponentially growing waves of audience resentment stretching, stretching out toward the ever-diminishing temporal horizon.

I added that box set to my WishList as "highest" priority as soon as I saw it.

I have most of the recordings in that set already (dammit!), but it's a real bargain if you don't have those.

I sat in a tiny room in Columbia University's music department with him and a bunch of music department grad students in the 80's while he played and talked about one of his then-new works. I can't remember now whether it was the Desert Music or Different Trains.
