Robert Altman RIP The "Nashville", "MASH" director died in Los Angeles. Link coming soon.
His last great movie, for me, is 1992's The Player, lately he was hit-and-miss for me (mostly miss), but he truly was one of the giants. And everybody has stolen stuff from him.

"Health" was brillant for its scenes where Dick Cavett would sit in a hotel room, watching Carson.

Every time I catch the hem of my skirt in the car door I think of Three Women. One of my favorite movies.

Nashville influenced me in a whole bunch of ways I hadn't actually thought about until just now.

I wouldn't call it my favorite movie, but it's pretty much at the top of the "most important to me" list.

RIP. I liked Altman a lot. The unique feeling I always got from his movies was that I was actually present in the movie myself. You know, the way he mixes sounds and scenes, like being there and listening for yourself or seeing for yourself, the way he jumps from one focus to the the next, much like we really look/hear what's around us, not through the selective touch of the sound/film editor. I also liked Gosford Park, Orange, and I did enjoy Prêt-à-Porter. The player was great and I think I will be watching 3 women too tonight. Sad.

Hmm, FelliniBlank's comment from Mefi:
I hope at the funeral they let everyone deliver their eulogies at the same time, all talking amongst each other like some lovely mournful Bach 20-part invention.

Thank you for the ride and RIP man, RIP.

carmina, that's a great description of Altman's movies. They really do feel more like life than any other director's work I've ever seen.

I just saw A Prairie Home Companion over the weekend, and my friends and I were talking about how that movie seemed to be both Garrison Keillor AND Robert Altman's way of summing up, and making peace with, their careers. The movie had moments in it that reminded me of a LOT of Altman's earlier films, from Nashville to 3 Women to Come Back To The Five And Dime Jimmy Dean. What a great eulogy for Mr. Altman.

and you know BP, this was a feature in his cinema that was most negatively criticized.

His elderly posture too makes me feel like I lost a grandfather, a detached but a great storyteller grandfather.
