In my day, in order to blow off your hand, you had to:

0) Buy a copy of Factsheet Five at the local indie record store downtown
1) Write away to order the Loompanics catalog from the listing in FS5
2) Figure out a way to intercept the catalog from the family mailbox before mom gets it
3) Order the Anarchist's Cookbook and the US Army "improvised explosives" pamphlet from Loompanics, using postal money order bought with cash
4) Make very sure you intercepted the subsequent delivery.
5) Be literate enough to actually read and understand the instructions in the books, but
6) Be crazy enough to disregard the safety warnings in the books.
7) (I don't know. I bailed out after step 5.)
