Eh? I don't get this. Do the first "puzzle" on the page, and, if you feel like it, report your result inside with either "yes" if you got the 98% result, or "no" if you got the 2% result (so that people reading via the "recent comments" page don't get tipped off). [More:]

I don't understand why 98% of people would respond the same way, and, in fact, I don't even believe they would. Did you?
No.

No.

Yes. I think it has to do with the number of letters in the word and the number you are repeating. My mom is really bad at spelling and is always a "no" responder - I think her mind only tells her there are 5 letters in that word so she actually struggles to come up with a word at all.

I was thinking of that possibility, and it may be down to that - but there are several others with the same number of letters.

Do we call them the same thing in the US? Are they really common? Some people honestly only know of maybe 10 different versions of the answer, so that would throw the results off.

Also, it is the first that I can immediately recall when I list them alphabetically in my head.

blackkar, yes, and yes. (This, this and this.)

Yeah, 98% result for me.

I also totally fell for the counting-F's thing as well.

One possible explanation. :)

Sorry, y'all... I'm taking out comments that mention a particular "thing" so that people reading the "recent comments" page won't have an idea of any specific item in their heads before they do the test.
posted by taz 19 November | 14:11
No. I thought of the first "thing" that I was recently adjusting in storage.
posted by stilicho 19 November | 14:29
funny... my "thing" isn't related to anything; I'm surprised I didn't think of what I was just preparing this afternoon.
posted by taz 19 November | 14:32
Yes for me, but I'll admit that I cheated and didn't repeat the number to myself for 15 seconds.

No.

Well the answer's obvious..we're the 2%. For some reason we've all gathered here (it's the bunnies!)
posted by flopsy 19 November | 15:47
hee. I'm not going to say the most obvious thing about bunnies just now. (Okay, doc, maybe the second most obvious thing.)
posted by taz 19 November | 15:56
I think the explanation for this lies in how people converse while working a crossword puzzle.
posted by mischief 19 November | 17:12
Gee, I was a 98%-er.

But, on the plus side, apparently I'm a genius according to the second puzzle.

Yes. Makes me feel so conformist. :(

But I will add that I had a brief moment of doubt before I clicked the link where I wondered if the object I was thinking about actually belonged in the category of items they were looking for. Then I was like, 'eh, fuck it' and clicked anyway.
