I once said that I didn't believe in the idea of 'guilty pleasures' when it came to music. I lied. I've been listening to this song on repeat for the past hour and I love it.

*waves goodbye to whatever coolness he has*
Don't you know you gotta stick to your guns!

What isn't cool about 80s cockrock?

and then there's this.
I'm digging my hole even deeper since that outfit is Canadian. When I was about 17, my family visited Quebec City. After dinner, we kids were allowed to wander off. I found this biker/rocker bar. The video over the bar was playing Kiss, AC/DC and all the usual suspects, but when this bunch came on, the place went apeshit cheering. Canada takes good care of her mullet-rockers. I related this story to a Canadian mefite and he said, "Oh Yeah, [that outfits lead singer/guitarist] never needs to buy his own drinks ever again."

The first one made me want to listen to Total Eclipse Of The Heart.

So I did, and it's still great!

Did you make me download Poison? Are you putin me on?

Yes I did. And you loved it. And I never put anyone on when it comes to music.

I've spent a disturbing amount of time listening to Genesis (Phil Collins stuff - I'd never heard of 'em before 1980 or so) and Def Leppard lately.

I just balance it out with The Chameleons and Magazine.

jonmc, I think less highly of you than before.

black8: I remember way back you made a comment on MeFi about liking Black Flag and Motley Crue's "Live Wire" for the same reason. I knew me and you were on the same wavelength at that moment. Def Leppard, Magazine, either one, they're both ultimately a bunch of guys who said "Hey, let's form a band and make some noise," the rest is all politics and other bullshit.

Forgive me father, for I have sinned. I like Vanessa Paradise, and not only for her looks but also for her singing...

To me, 80's hairmetal is a bit like 60's garage rock. Most of the bands if they had let it go after their few good singles would be fondly remembered. Night Ranger had "Don't Tell Me You Love me" and "Sister Christian," Cinderella had "Shake Me" and "Shelter," Motley Crue had "Live Wire," "Wild Side," and "Girls, Girls, Girls," Ratt had "Round & Round" and "Back For More" Bon Jovi had "I'll be There For You" and "Lay Your Hands On me"...and Poison had "Every Rose Has It's Thorn," "Talk Dirty To Me" and "Fallen Angel." Nothing earthshatteringly innovative, true, but they make me smile when I hear them and that's close enough for rock and roll as they say.

Okay, I'd like a cd of all the songs you mentioned, jonmc. "Talk Dirty to Me" has always been one of my favorites. Hey, I liked "White Snake" too.

You can pick one up at any highway truck stop.

That's kind of the point, man.

(by which I mean this: that music is not for people who get to lead 'interesting' lives. it's for people who are stuck leading lives that numb the mind and spirit and need something unsubtle to remind them that they're alive during the brief respites between friday and monday. and whether you wind up being one of those people is more a matter of luck than anything else.)

or as a wiser man put it

Nah, you've admitted to the guilty pleasure of Poison before, jonmc. "Unskinny Bop is still my favourite, but I've yet to actually feel the need to buy their greatest hits, even though it is very cheap on Amazon.

Waving goodbye to coolness is a remarkably cool gesture.
