03 November 2006

What a lovely day I've had! [More:]The day started out just peachy this morning, talking to some lovely bunnies in IRC.

This afternoon I drove to the coast with a friend, we went to Frinton, about 70 miles away, got there around 3, had coffee, browsed a couple of stores and then walked along the sea wall as the sun set.

And God! What a sunset! I took tons of pictures, there was the sun setting to our right, and behind us, the moon on the water. I really hope the ones I took with the night setting come out, I had no tripod and had to balance the camera on the wall for stability. The light was absolutely amazingly beautiful.

Then we had dinner in a café, proper home-made steak & onion pie, followed by apple crumble & custard. Second time this week I ate too much.

We found an AA meeting, and, as a new face in a small town, they asked me to lead the meeting, so I was able to bore everyone silly and get to hear the sound of my own voice for half an hour.

A good drive home, and now I'm feeling that strange combination of really tired and really buzzing that a good day out often brings.

I'll post the photos tomorrow, too many to sort out now.
Hey, wow - my dad's parents used to live in Frinton. IIRC there was a sewage outlet pipe on the beach (well, away from the beach itself, but near enough to shore that people knew it was there). Although that must have been 20-25 years ago (God, I feel old now) and many things have changed since then.

Looking forward to seeing the photos, although it's been so long, I doubt that they'll job any memories.

All I took were photos of the horizon, none of the town. I doubt much has changed, but there are petitions in all the shops because British Rail (or whoever is responsible for it now) want to replace the gates (or, should I say, The Gates) at the level crossing with an automatic barrier.

Now this is very, very serious indeed, if you live in Frinton. Because if you live 'inside The Gates', then you are posh, and if you live 'outside The Gates' then you are common as muck. Allegedly. And The Gates are operated by a man who sits in a little hut. Although his job is to close the gates when a train approaches, I think he is also paid by the posh people to close the gates when common people approach too, in order to keep them out of Frinton.

Frinton has one pub, and it took years and years, decades, in fact, of lobbying by common townspeople and breweries to have this pub there. Tonight, Friday night, at 9pm there were 3 people in it, and 2 of them worked there.

There is no fish 'n' chip shop, no kiosk selling rock and '99s', no kebab shop. It's all very genteel and posh. And also peaceful and tranquil.

I suspect if I lived there I would inevitably upset the locals within minutes of arrival, and they look like the kind of people who could grudge-bear for England in the Olympics.

Lovely for a day trip. Probably hell to live there,if you have, er, opinions, ideas, that kind of thing.
