MY GYM SOCKS [expletives]! I have abnormally long calves but am of average height.→[More:]Consequently, I always feel awkward when wearing shoes and socks with shorts. I don't think it looks quite right. My preference in sock is a non-white tube or longish crew pulled slightly down from the shin to create a little slack. I see some guys sporting those no-length socks (tennis socks?) with shorts, but I don't think I could pull off that look. Suggestions?

Why not wear ankle socks? Longer than the "no-length" variety but without the slack of the tube.

See, I think the ankle socks would emphasize that long (sex-ay) expanse of calf.

Your crew pulled down and scrunched a little will look just fine. Also, try gray instead of white.
