Murray The K. Namechecked in song by the Ramones and the Dictators, consort of the Beatles and Stones and show promoter, Murray Kaufman was probably the most influential DJ on the East Coast. Mention his name to anyone over 50, and you'll probably get a wistful smile and stories of the Swingin' Soiree, the influence of which still reverberates.
I knew this was a jonmc post as soon as I saw "Murray The K"!

I also got a Tony Joe White boxset and Neil Young and Crazy Horse live album from the Fillmore in 1970 to work on. Gonna be a good day for old music, I guess.

How pervasive was Murray's influence? Some bunch of jokers cut a cold war 'Russian' novely record called 'Go, Go, Radio Moscow,' featuring a guy called 'Nikita The K.'

(I have an mp3, I'll put it up when I get home)

The Maysles brothers filmed the Beatles for British TV when they first came to the US--it's on DVD now--and there's a scene of John Lennon calling Murray the K a wanker and he didn't know what it was, "Oh yeah, I'm a wacker!"
