I often bring cheese sandwiches to work for lunch, and they invariably consist of just bread and two slices of cheese. One of my coworkers insists that that is not a sandwich, that you have to have something else in there for it to be a sandwich. Whatever. So I renamed it, "Bread and Cheese, Sandwich-Style."
JanetLand - one of your cow orkers is sorely mistaken: a sandwich can easily just have one filling. The classic cucumber sandwich is just that - two slices of bread, butter and cucumber. Bacon butties can have just bacon in (although that would probably just not taste right). Also, Wikipedia on sandwiches.
My grandma used to make sandwich spread sandwiches for her kids. Just two slices of bread and that stuff. No meat, no lettuce, just sandwich spread. Apparently she thought it was an all-in-one instead of just a condiment.
"A sandwich is not commonly understood to include burritos, tacos, and quesadillas, which are typically made with a single tortilla and stuffed with a choice filling of meat, rice, and beans," he wrote.
But what about the cheese? What about the cheeeeeese???
Thank god someone finally resolved this! I've been getting ulcers, tearing my hair out over what is or is not a sandwich. I can now die with my mind at peace.
My local Panera Bread doesn't specialize in Mexican foods, so what's that Panera Bread's problem with a Mexican restaurant? If I want a deli type sandwich, that's what I get. If I want a quesadilla, that's what I get. Sheesh.
