Some classic New Zealand music for y'all. →[More:]First 3 songs typical of the '
Dunedin Sound' of the 80s. Dunedin's my hometown and all of the good NZ music came out of there at this time (In my not-so-humble opinion!)
Straitjacket Fits is my favourite band of all time, and
She Speeds, off their first EP,
Life in One Chord, is pretty much their defining song. It was the Fits' music that ultimately shaped my musical taste: jangly guitars, whiny vocals (heh) and not too heavy on the drums. OK, The Chills:
Pink Frost was their first real hit in New Zealand, back in 1984 or thereabouts. I don't have any songs of The 3Ds on my computer, but here is Betchadupa covering their song
Outer Space, great song to dance around to.
OK and here's some anthemic NZ music.
Whaling by DD Smash and
Bliss by Th' Dudes can both be heard at rugby games, sports bars, and anywhere a load of drunk people gather together.
Finally some rock (and it's actually from the last 10 years). Shihad is definitely a band to check out.
My Mind's Sedate is loud and metal-y, although the band's most recent album has gone more in a punk direction. And The Datsuns are balls-outty mindless rock which sometimes you just need to listen to -
MF from Hell.
Beauty, mate.
