I swear this shit will strip paint ... [More:]

I have always wanted to make my own cranberry juice, so this week I bought a pound of fresh berries (bein' as how Xgvn is upcomin' and one can actually find such a thing).

Poured 'em in a pot, covered 'em with cold water, put on the lid, brought to a boil, simmered for 10 minutes, and then mashed 'em through a strainer. To get the most out of it, I rinsed the pulp a couple times as well since this stuff needs to be diluted anyway.

I knew not to take more than a tentative sip of the raw juice, and let me tell you, heed that warning.

I use concentrated apple juice or grape juice to sweeten the cranberry extract, and then I dilute it with cold green tea.

Yum!
mmm. Good idea. Think I'll look for some too. Cranberry juice is good for keeping your ...plumbing... in good order too. :)

I remember once I made cranberry muffins, using a blueberry recipe, but neglecting to adjust the amount of sweetener. They came out of the oven puffy, golden, gorgeous ... perfect! So naturally, I brought them as a gift to friends without having sampled them.

Later, much later, my friends admitted that even the pigeons spat them out.

Ocean Spray products are 17% corn syrup, 3.7% (!) juice concentrate and 80% water, just to give you an idea of how diluted and highly sweetened the commercial products can be. Amazing how far the cranberry flavor can go, and the taste difference between corn syrup and other sweeteners makes this worth the effort.

Freezing the concentrate into cubes could make for some damn interesting drinks. Holiday punch bowl maybe?

This would make a good milkshake blended with some vanilla ice cream.

A cranberry milkshake sounds great. I once bought one of those 8 oz, $8 non-concentrated bottles of cranberry juice at a natural foods store and made batch after batch of vinaigrette with it. Yum.

Now I want a good, fancy salad. Dammit - it's four in the morning. Where the hell am I going to find one?

Burn a quiet song louder? || Just then, the baby bird saw a big thing. "Are you my mother?" she asked.
