Yay or Nay? Advent Devotionals [More:]
are daily reflections on a Bible passages in light of the Advent Season (the coming of the Christ Child). My church has members of the congregation select a day (and associated Bible verse) and write a devotional. Would people be grossly offended if I posted the devotional to MeCha on a daily basis through the holiday season?

I think it would be an interesting way to share how "rank and file" Christians feel about their faith. But if people would really rather that I not use this forum for this purpose, I can respect that.
It wouldn't offend me (non-Christian). It's easy enough to avoid threads I don't want to read. However, that's not to say I wouldn't read it, because I probably would.

Those sorts of things always smack of proselytizing to me, and I'm personally pretty tired of having that religion thrown at me all the time.

But it's easy enough to skip a thread if you make good use of the [More:] button like you did up there.

I would agree with deborah and cmonkey in that I don't mind skipping a thread that doesn't interest me at all. However, I might also add that if no one expresses any interest, maybe there's not much point?

And, I don't mean to sound disrespectful at all doohickie. Different strokes and all that.

I'm not religions, but I'm fascinated by religion and its role in people's lives, and I'd probably read it. Perhaps if you started a blog for this purpose and posted a link here to each day's devotional instead? You would probably get a wider audience, and it wouldn't look so much like you're proselytizing to the MeCha crowd. Plus it would be much easier to find the previous articles without having to wade through all the other threads that are posted here.

I'd be interested.

No thank you. I wouldn't be grossly offended, but I'd rather not see it here.

Sounds fun! I say do it.

A blog would probably be the best way- then you could share it with the people in your church, too.

Meh.

I don't know if this is the proper place for this. I have no aversion to anyone discussing their faith or posting on a religious topic, but making a concerted effort to do it every single day is a bit much.

Why do religious sorts always feel like they have to "share" their faith? And, why would it take more than one post to accomplish your stated goal? I agree with TPS: GYOB, put it in your profile, and post to it here once. Those that are interested will go read it. One really nice thing about MeCha is that there aren't really any agendas here, and people don't use it as a platform for anything. We don't have constant politically driven crap like in Mefi. About the only thing that's an agenda here is posting cute pictures of animals.

Once a day seems rather formalistic and mechanical and not what this site is about. If you've got a really thought-provoking one (or even several), of course share it.

But once a day, well, that's for devotionals.com.

And that goes for any once-a-day: once a day math brain-teasers, once-a-day Dawkins quotes, once-a-day pimped-out hot rods; all those things should be on a site devoted to those things, not here.

Ummmm... it is written by and distributed to people in my church. I guess I'm leaning toward linking to it at most.

Or how about this: Maybe I'll post them to my blog and anyone who would like comment about them can comment there.

I appreciate everyone's respectful input; I will respect those who would rather not see it every day by posting a link the first day (I think Dec. 1) to my blog and going from there.

Cool! I'll definitely read it. Gotta love Advent!

Sounds like a great plan, Doohickie.

If there are ones you think particularly good, please post those individually too.

Okay, details coming soon. I found another forum that tolerates religious discussion that will host the thread (they're an offshoot of BeliefNet and are mostly non-Christians but for the most part pretty tolerant nice folks). I will post details when the first devotional is available.

I would encourage anyone who wants to comment to join the other forum and comment there; if there are enough comments to warrant posting over here, then maybe I'll cross post it. I don't think I can make that call myself since I look at all these both through Christian-colored glasses, and through the filter of knowing the authors. (For instance, my son's, I think, is quite good for a 16-year-old, but you probably wouldn't be overly impressed by it.)
